While Bill Bowerman’s name might not ring out as loud as some other Nike big-wigs the co-founder is very much an icon in his own right, responsible for the initial handshake partnership with Phil Knight that got that footwear empire going in the first place. This two pair pack pays homage to the deceased Bowerman, dipping the Tinker Hatfield designed Nike Air Trainer 1 Mid Premium in a premium look that features Bill’s initials across the back along with his football jersey number (coincidentally the ’51′ doubles as a marker for the year in which he won the Bill Hayward Amateur Athlete of the Year award). Both pairs will launch on September 21st, so click through with us to make up your mind on which you’re copping and be advised that you can scoop up the Nike Air Trainer 1 Premium “BB51″ a little early from spots like Crooked Tongues.

Among the chief reasons that Beaverton is synonymous with the world’s best sneakers is another famed Oregon ‘B’ who shared serious ties with the Ducks family. Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman came back to his alma mater after a tour of duty with the US Army in WWII, led the ‘Track Men of Oregon’ to an incredible stretch of success in the 1960s, then set his waffle iron to ‘world domination’ and pushed the Swoosh to the top before passing on the eve of the new millennium. Bowerman will always remain a part of Nike’s bedrock, and two luxurious new takes on one of their superstar designers’ game-changers will soon release in tribute to his contributions. The Nike Air Trainer 1 ‘BB51′ remembers Bowerman’s Ducks football days and takes things upscale with a premium black leather build joined by another in caramel nubuck that you’ll in some new photos later. Click through for more photos of the black ‘BB51′ Air Trainer 1s and stick with Sneaker News for US release info.

After taking a close look at the black beauty from Nike Sportswear’s luxurious tribute to co-founder Bill Bowerman, here we examine that same premium quality in different materials and colors. The Nike Air Trainer 1 Premium ‘BB51′ is equally impressive with its khaki/black distribution switched, this nubuck pair adding a rugged dimension by way of its tangential connections to the iconic ‘wheat’ Timberland look. They symbolize Bowerman’s constructive influence on a brand that built on his success coaching the Oregon Ducks track team, and imagine him at the very heart of the brand by swapping out the heel logo for a varsity-styled ‘BB51′ script. The legend of Tinker Hatfield may not have begun with sneakers, but it certainly will end that that way. The former Oregon athlete (who ran track for Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman) and architecture graduate signed on with Nike and began designing sneakers in 1985 after realizing that his architectural skills could be applied to footwear. It began with the Air Max 1 and Air Trainer 1, two sneakers that revolutionized their respective sports, but it was his collaborative process with Michael Jordan with the Air Jordan III that opened a whole new window of design aesthetics in athletic footwear. Thirty years later, Tinker Hatfield is a veritable legend in the genre, leaving behind countless classic molds while preparing some newer concepts for the future. Check out some of Tinker’s greatest sneaker designs below and head to Complex for the entire feature.
