nike lebron 8 bhm customs 08 Nike LeBron 8 BHM Customs by C4

The hottest trend in sneaker customization lately has been appropriating colorways from other high profile releases.  The Nike LeBron 8 was particularly popular as a canvas for this kind of expression, colorways ranging from Air Jordan imitations to allusions to earlier LeBron standouts.  This latest example comes from a guy responsible for getting the first ‘Dunkman’ edition LeBron 8s out there, a custom job also borrowing from the Zoom LeBron IV ‘Graffiti’ in an exclusive story here on Sneaker News this March.  Conor Burns aka C4‘s Nike LeBron 8 BHM takes its inspiration from the latest round of Black History Month releases, their black and gold styling also a reminder of the Air Jordan Defining Moments Package.  So is this BHM/DMP LeBron 8 the best custom job we’ve seen on this model?  Click through for more images and leave a comment to let us know where they rank. via c4/UPandCOMING32 on NT.

This February, Nike continued their tradition of issuing special sneakers in honor of Black History Month, 2011′s BHM models marked by a luxurious black/gold colorway.  The 2011 BHM releases sold quickly thanks in large part to their deluxe aesthetic, but did you know a select few pairs were even fancier?  Check out these special wooden box editions of the Air Jordan III, Converse Star Player, Nike Air Force 1 and Zoom Kobe VI.  They’re relatively simple when compared to the ZKVI ‘Snake Crate’ or some of the other special packaging we’ve seen in recent years but it seems a fitting match to the sneakers’ understated dignity.  Click through to see more and let us know if you would’ve shelled out the extra cash to cop these (or if you’ll be planning to keep an eye out in case they hit the ‘bay).  via Mayor

Sneaker News’ Michael Jordan Through The Years feature has detailed Michael Jordan’s greatest achievements in his career chronicled by each individual Air Jordan shoe. The Air Jordan III was certainly one to remember, as Michael rose to the occasion and finished off one of the most memorable moments in sports history when he jumped from the free-throw line to complete an astounding one-handed dunk during the NBA Dunk Contest. For this Black History Month, Nike has focused on the achievements of Michael Jordan, honoring the Air Jordan III as one of Michael’s most memorable Air Jordans. Tomorrow is the official release date of the Air Jordan III ‘Black History Month’, available at select Jordan Brand retailers like 21 Mercer. One of the three athletes honored by Nike for Black History Month 2011 is Kobe Bryant, who was recognized for his greatness as displayed by his astounding 81-point performance against the Toronto Raptors in 2006. Of course, since that game, Kobe has accomplished a lot more than an 81-point performance, like back-to-back NBA championships in 2009 and 2010 as well as an Olympic Gold Medal in 2008. Arriving at select Nike retailers tomorrow is the Nike Zoom Kobe VI ‘Black History Month’, which features the gorgeous Black/Gold themed colorway and the ‘BHM’ logo on the heel, with special insoles commemorating the month-long tradition. 21 Mercer will have these available tomorrow so be sure to cop these if you can because you can also find them on eBay.

Black History Month Display @ Nike Stadium NYC

nike stadium nyc black history month 1 Black History Month Display @ Nike Stadium NYC

In today’s world of advanced metrics and MIT-educated general managers, sports statistics are both more precise than ever and subtly misleading.  We seek to objectify the sports we love with numbers as an attempt to further the decisiveness inherent in the outcomes of these games.  Put another way, it’s impossible to see someone like Michael Jordan winning six championships while seemingly breaking the laws of physics and hold that simultaneously in mind alongside stereotyping and prejudice.

Nike wants you to consider this when you visit the BHM tribute at Bowery Stadium in New York, a visual history of how black athletes have transcended basketball to unite and inspire folks of all colors and creeds.  Don’t be ashamed if you get chills just from looking at these images of guys like Dr. J, His Airness and the Black Mamba — their contribution to the game of basketball and our society is immeasurably large, to the point where writing about how basketball has helped to promote equality is all at once completely obvious and somehow unavoidably pretentious.  So just click through, look at the photos and ponder what it means that we as the people are flying ‘Ever Higher’ on the same wings Air Jordan himself once soared, and if you’re in the NYC area be sure to head over to Bowery Stadium and check it out for yourself.
