What Do You Think?: The Next Signature Basketball Athlete

sig shoe what do you think What Do You Think?: The Next Signature Basketball Athlete

Take a look at the NBA players that have signature shoes today and it’s clear that being a signature athlete requires the perfect alignment of skill, charisma, sheer location of employment, and a few other things that make a human into a superstar. LeBron, Kobe, Melo, CP3, Wade, and D-Rose all play in major markets where the opportunity for extensive media coverage is all but guaranteed, with Kevin Durant being the one industry anomaly of being a highly successful signature athlete playing in a small-market city; this seems like a healthy list that should hold us down for a few years, but being content only means one thing – ┬áthere is room for more.

The landscape of sneaker brands is unique in that some of these labels have become flexible with who they choose to represent their brands on that “face of the brand” tier.┬áTake up-and-coming Under Armour for example; their lone signature athlete is Brandon Jennings, but with DeAndre Jordan playing in a huge market and his insane dunk placing some added spice to his shoes, the neophytic UA label has experienced some added exposure as the prime “indie” brand. While the responsbility that comes with being a signature athlete is something that can be compromised, Nike, Jordan Brand, adidas, Li-Ning, and Under Armour – the major brands in the basketball category – all have the room to fit in a new guy on the team.

But is it even time to welcome a new name to the sneaker industry? There’s no doubt that player names play a large part in shaping consumer tendencies, and with Kobe Bryant nearing retirement every passing year, LeBron well on his way to signature shoe history for Nike, KD well-ingrained in the Nike’s historical fibers, and D-Rose sitting prettily with a life-time contract, it’s a ripe-enough time for a fresh name to be thrown into the mix. Each brand across the board has a select group of athletes to represent their non-signature models, but is anyone ready to step up? We’ve narrowed down a list of the top candidates that may be worthy of sig-shoe distinction, so check out our list below and chime in with your opinions on this latest installment of What Do You Think?.

Sneaker customizer Laptop LaSane pays tribute to not one, but two of powerful big-men with this sneaker custom – Charles Barkley, who once terrorized the league by playing larger than his size, and Blake Griffin, whose throwdowns are as vicious as they are entertaining. While neither player has had the distinction of shattering an NBA backboard, both have that power-dunking style that have defenders cowering in fear whenever they elevate above the rim. We almost never see the Nike Air Max2 CB ’94 be used as a custom, but Laptop LaSane does quite the job by implementing the colors of the Western Conference All-Stars and creating an elephant-print style graphic mimicking a shattered backboard. A full gallery is below so take a look and let us know what you think!

Jordan Brand’s burgeoning new generation of stars received a rapid jolt with the addition of the soaring highlight reel Blake Griffin. We know he can dunk unlike any other, but does he have that fluid style and flair that MJ had? During this quirky moment in yesterday’s pre-game warm-up between the Los Angeles Clippers and Miami Heat, Blake Griffin displayed his inner Jumpman by dunking the ball in iconic fashion – toes pointed out and the basketball at the highest peak of elevation. Was this a candid moment, or did Blake tip off the photographers with a “hey…watch this”? Check out the comparison between Blake’s version and Michael’s original below.

Jordan Brand Signs Blake Griffin

November 2nd, 2012 by | 17 comments

jordan brand signs blake griffin 1 570x425 Jordan Brand Signs Blake Griffin

The next generation of Jordan Brand is looking mighty healthy as the brand that Michael built has been fortified with the presence of one of the most exciting players in the game today. Blake Griffin, who found his way into our hearts with his deadpan charisma and magnificent dunking showcase, officially joins Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, Ray Allen, and newcomer Russell Westbrook as the brand’s headlining athletes, teaming up with CP3 in one of the biggest basketball markets in the nation.

This may come as a surprise considering the sudden stoppage of the momentum gained by Nike and the non-signature flagship Hyperdunk model, and many of Blake’s fans projected the Oklahoma alumni to eventually join LeBron, KD, and Kobe as Nike’s exclusive signature-sneaker club. However, this is certainly an outstanding strategic move by Jordan Brand in the wake of Dwyane Wade’s departure; Los Angeles, New York, Miami, OKC, and Chicago make up the bulk of the big-market teams, and Jordan Brand certainly has their chess pieces in the right places.

This week, in his season debut, Blake wore a Royal/Black colorway of the Jordan Super.Fly, which all but sealed Griffin’s allegiance with Jordan Brand. The question that instantly surfaces is: Will Blake get his own signature shoe? Who will get his own shoe first – Russell, or Blake? Will either of them even get their own shoe, or will they be the ambassadors for the top-shelf models like the Super.Fly? There’s a lot of potential with this newfound partnership, so be sure to stick with Sneaker News for all updates regarding the newly acquainted Jordan Brand and Blake Griffin connection.
