From one Charles Barkley-based Nike Sportswear mashup to another, Sneaker News follows Sir Charles to the Showcase Showdown. Barkley appeared on The Price is Right’s second annual ‘Celebrity Charity Week’, and played up to Hall of Fame status with a whopping $67k+ win for Sacramento’s Mustard Seed School. A world without Charles Barkley would be a world far less entertaining than it already is. His opinions never fail to coerce discussion, and it’s that type of polarizing personality that will ensure Barkley a permanent spot behind a studio camera! Let’s not forget, however, that Barkley is indeed one of the greatest players in NBA history, beginning his career with the Philadelphia 76ers; this latest Air Force 1 Bespoke in Layupshot‘s unofficial NBA Superstar series pays homage to Barkley in the red/white/blue, built with suede, patent leather, and smooth leather materials. As Nike Basketball continues its look back over twenty years of game changing designs, we’re reminded that the Air Jordan Legacy could have filled up half of the list (or perhaps one of its own). We see the connections to MJ in Tinker and company’s Air Flight Huarache and Air Raid designs and now with the pair pictured above, the other half of these features have focused on a key early ’90s rival. After he won a gold at Barcelona ’92 in the Air Force 180, Hall of Fame power forward Charles Barkley turned in his finest season and met up with MJ in the 1993 Finals. An MVP-level effort wasn’t enough for Sir Charles to capture that first championship, so Beaverton went back to the drawing board to create a product that perfectly married, in Hatfield’s words: “The outlandishness of Charles’ persona and the beauty of the product”
The Nike Air Max2 CB (’94) reflected Chuck’s rebellious persona thanks to designer Tracy Teague having the kind of freedom of expression to which Barkley alluded in his infamous ‘Role Model’ ad. Accordingly, the AM2 CB is an imposingly aggressive design equipped to handle sudden outbursts as the Round Mound of Rebound continued to play above his size. Features like straitjacket-inspired lockdown straps, reinforced ghillie lacing and a ferocious, toothy midsole made this design so memorable it was recently resurrected as the basis for Nike Sportswear’s Air Max Barkley, but longtime fans and collectors recognize the original style as irreplaceable. The ‘Olympic’ Air Jordan VII, Scottie Pippen’s Air Much Uptempo and Vince Carter’s Shox BB4 are all returning this summer to celebrate previous USAB gold medal performances, as is this pair pictured above in a different rendition from Nike Sportswear. A street-friendly modern day answer to the ‘Dream Team’ edition, this Volt-accented black nubuck Nike Air Force 180 is another reminder that it was only Michael Jordan who was able to keep the talented and charismatic Charles Barkley from rising to the pinnacle of the NBA and its sneaker scene. The last time we got a look at this Charles Barkely homage from Nike Sportswear, it earned a comparison to the Air Jordan Legacy with that series’ famed Stealth and Cool Grey shades combined. Will these Nike Air Max Barkleys now attract the same kind of attention as this summer’s ‘Olympic’ Air Jordan VI Retro? Probably not, but the same kind of altered sole coloring is evident when comparing this pair to the ones that popped up in late April. But ultimately we’re talking about trading grey for grey and keeping most of the shoe identical, which means it’ll still be a supremely versatile member of your rotation when you grab a pair from Nike Sportswear retailers like Sneaker Bistro or on eBay.
