In 2006, amidst a slew of Air Penny IV releases, Nike went a bit out of bounds with one design by applying a unique digital camouflage print on the upper and strap of the shoe. This funky upper wasn’t alone either; the Huarache 2k4 – a staunch performance basketball shoe – was created in tonal classic camouflage and snakeskin uppers and quickly hit the clearance racks while absorbing some laughs along the way. However, that style, including this digi-camo Air Penny IV, might do better in today’s sneaker scene, where loud designs and graphics reign supreme. This digi-camo pair of Penny releases didn’t do so well in stores and quickly became one of those unique outlet finds, but could Nike revisit this idea when the Penny IV re-releases again? Check out the final installment of this week’s Classics Revisited and let us know if these are hiding in your collection!

Classics Revisited: Nike Air Penny IV “Cool Grey” (2001)

cool grey penny iv Classics Revisited: Nike Air Penny IV Cool Grey (2001)

Quick disclaimer: While ‘Cool Grey’ isn’t an official part of this colorway, everyone and their maternal guardians called these Penny IVs as such. Moving on – the Air Penny IV ‘Cool Grey’ released in 2001 as one of the earliest ‘Retro’ releases of the Nike Air Penny as a whole. It quickly adopted the ‘Cool Grey’ moniker for having the patent leather mudguard and strap, mimicking the Air Jordan XI ‘Cool Grey’ that debuted that year as well, and the crossover effect of one banging colorway to another shoe made the Penny IV ‘Cool Grey’ a highly coveted item among Penny enthusiasts. This long-forgotten colorway remains as one of the best Penny IV colorways yet – perhaps a re-release is on the way in 2013? More of tonight’s Classics Revisited below, so take a look and stay tuned for the final Air Penny classic tomorrow!

Classics Revisited: Nike Air Penny III “White Sample” (1998)

Continuing Classics Revisited: Nike Air Penny is one of the more rare specimens of the Air Penny line – the unreleased sample. The Air Penny III had the incredibly tough task of playing follow-up to the ground-breaking Nike Air Foamposite One, but did so in seamless fashion; it features a Foamposite upper with design cues borrowed from the Air Penny II like the oval 1-Cent pendant and the rib-layered midsole, but the design was certainly distinct to hold its own. While the Air Penny III didn’t see a whole bunch of colorways in its original run, Nike did flirt with this white colorway that actually never went beyond the ‘Sample’ stage. Nike never brought it bought in the following ‘Retro’ and ‘House of Hoops’ releases, making this unreleased White Sample one of the most obscure and rare Air Penny productions ever.

Classics Revisited: Nike Air Penny IV “Orlando” (1998)

penny iv original Classics Revisited: Nike Air Penny IV Orlando (1998)

We continue our week of Air Penny classics by pointing to the most obscure of the Air Penny signature line – the Nike Air Penny IV. The relatively ‘overlooked’ nature of the Air Penny IV falls within reason; it arrived after Shaq broke up his exciting yet unfruitful partnership with Penny, who fell into a state of nagging injuries that proved to be invulnerable to recovery. Penny, quite frankly, was no longer the player he once was for a short four-season span, and once he was traded to Phoenix, he was no longer the same. It was understandable for Nike to seal the deal on the Air Penny and move on to bigger things with Gary Payton as well as Vince Carter and Shox Basketball, but the Air Penny line wasn’t completely dead; the Air Max Penny and Air Penny IV did in fact re-issue in the first half of the 2000s, and a much-celebrated return of the Air Foamposite One in 2007 proved to be the perfect resurrection of Penny into the most formidable Nike athlete he once was. Going back to the Penny IV – this original ‘Orlando’ colorway was never re-issued and stands as one of the most coveted of the Air Penny IV OGs, although a Retro release in 2013 could produce these once more. Check out this forgotten Air Penny below and stay tuned for more Classics Revisited: Nike Air Penny!

Classics Revisited: Nike Air Max Penny 1 “Knicks” (2005)

624017 041 Classics Revisited: Nike Air Max Penny 1 Knicks (2005)

We finished last week with a stretch of ’90s Basketball Classics, so why not keep it in the family? It was a dream for Knicks fans to welcome Penny Hardaway to the revered NYC backcourt, only the timing of his arrival wasn’t exactly optimal. While the era of Penny Hardaway as a Knickerbocker is one most NY fans tend to forget, what should never be forgotten is perhaps one of the best Air Penny sneakers of all-time the Air Max Penny 1 in the ‘Knicks’ colorway. Arriving in stores in May of 2005 alongside a slew of other Air Max Penny 1 colorways, this ‘Knicks’ version was a simple upgrade of the original ‘Orlando Magic’ colorway, adding a Royal Blue inner bootie and Orange trim on the Max Air unit and other surrounding details. Nike Basketball never had a problem using Penny’s team colors with his kicks, and you’ll definitely catch wind of that later this week when we focus on more Air Penny releases for this week of Classics Revisited!
