CONVERSE CHUCK TAYLOR ALL STAR
The Converse Chuck Taylor All Star is considered to be the oldest athletic sneaker in history. It was created in 1917 and later became a popular basketball and athletic sneaker. The Chuck Taylor is named after basketball player Charles Taylor, who was a player on the Converse-sponsored basketball team called the Converse All Stars. The Chuck Taylor All Star is an American fashion icon and continues to be widely popular today.

Remember that monstrous eyeball peering out from the side of a pair of Converse Chuck Taylor All-Star’s we showed you a few days back? They’ve still got their eye on you, and you should be staring right back at the nicely executed haunting feel of the MAMAFAKA x Converse Chuck Taylor All-Star collaboration. These new pics reveal a slight switch from the first preview and the retail release, with blacked out eyelets and laces on the pair shown here that will be making its way to retail. If you’re not familiar with the name MAMAFAKA, we’re not talking about a spinoff to a Ben Stiller film franchise, but rather a Thai graphic designer born Pharuephon Mukdasanit. He’s not (yet) a household name in the US, but designs like this MAMAFAKA x Converse Chuck Taylor All Star will help to change that. These new black and white Chuck hightops add an eye from Mukdasanit’s ‘Mr. HELL YEAH’ piece at the Bangkok Art and Culture Center, a larger than life grinning character whose hairy ‘skin’ is echoed by the texture covering these kicks. Have a closer look below, let us know how these compare to some of the more elaborate Chuck Taylor collaborations we’ve seen and stick with Sneaker News for word on a possible US release. via ToysREvil

The Panama hat is a straw head-topper with a traditional brim often worn to accompany lightweight summertime suits. As such, they denote a certain kind of casual luxury, and that feel is very much echoed by this upcoming pair of Chuck Taylors. The Converse All Star Panama-Hat Hi applies the familiar texture of a woven upper to a beige pair that looks like the exact shade Jack himself has shading that unmistakable monocle, as well as a brown edition whose hat version you’d want to steer clear on a hot day. But as footwear, they’re supremely versatile with just a hint of upscale appeal, and you’ll find them available now from select Converse Japan retailers.

Chambray is a natural fit for Converse’s classics, its fine weave just one degree from the flat-finish canvases that’ve typified Chuck Taylors for nearly a century. These new Converse Chuck Taylor All Star ‘Chambray’ hightops apply the white-fill/colored-warp formula to a couple of leather-patched hightops, the blue pair adding a contrasting overlay to emphasize the traditional shades in which you probably already own a shirt or two. Click through for a closer look at those and the ‘black’ pair and grab yours now straight from Converse.

Japanese fashion superstar Nigo’s A Bathing Ape label has its own Chuck Taylor tribute in the Apesta, but BAPE’s leader reached outside his brand’s bounds for this latest project, a new set for the ultra-premium Converse Addict line that applies the designer’s signature approach to an old favorite. The Nigo x Converse Addict Chuck Taylor All Star adds a zipper to its lateral sides, a move that switches to the exterior-facing side a feature we’ve seen applied to many classic basketballers’ medial panels in recent months. Furthermore, the zipper placket is more fully exposed than those other zipped kicks, and this distinct application serves as the exlamation point on the ‘opposite day’ vibe. This unique feature in addition to top-notch materials and a Vibram sole has these north of $300USD; are they worth importing from the select Japanese retailers that now have them in stock? via HB

John Varvatos’ collaboration with Converse will remain popular into the forseeable future thanks to subtle variations like these that reflect his signature aesthetic while allowing for multiple degrees of progress. These new drops pair a couple of Converse All Star Laceless Hi designs cast in canvas with two lowtops done mostly in that same material. But the overall effect of the Sprint Grip Ox is decidedly different thanks to a leather wrap around the sole and tonal and textural contrasts thanks to suede toes.
