Converse and Marimekko have been in love for nearly two years now, and there’s a variety of new eye-catching patterns on the way for the first half of 2013. We’ll start with the Marimekko x Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Platform EVA, a disco-fied take on the classic Chuck whose red and white striped super-sole echoes the colors used in a strawberry patterned upper. Looking back over the past few months, the Converse Jack Purcell has excelled in tartan plaids, several patterned canvas builds, upscale woven constructions and most recently, a bit of chambray for spring. It should come as no surprise, then, that the One Star’s smile-toed classic lowtops are equally strong in premium leather. Converse has plenty of premium treatments up their sleeves for Spring/Summer of 2013 thanks to the likes of the John Varvatos and Marimekko collaborations sticking around. The JV side of things will continue its vintage, zipper laden look via models like the Converse JV Weapon Mid and the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star. On the more cutesy end of the spectrum are the Marimekko pairs, which rely on rather bright shapes and patterns to set them apart. And on top of all that the inhouse team at Converse has a load of deluxe looks for the Converse Jack Purcell. The Converse Jack Purcell has always been a low-key favorite, but it’s been very quiet in recent months for such a foundational design. Here’s some of the ‘good’ quiet, a couple of classy Jack Purcells crafted in chambray cotton weaves. These blue and white kicks follow up on last spring’s chambray Chuck Taylors and a pair of Purcell LTTs that hit in 2011 with a multicolor layout. Previewed exclusively during the Missoni Fall/Winter 2013 runway show was this Converse Jack Purcell designed with the trademark Missoni zig-zag print. Using the classic Jack Purcell as the base, this Fall/Winter 2013 release features white and several tones of grey intertwined in the iconic print. The overall designed is inspired by the entire F/W ’13 collection and should release later this year. The latest in a long line of DC Comics-inspired Converse Chuck Taylor All Stars comes from Japan in the style of one of the earliest such collaborations. The DC Comics x Converse Japan U.S. Originator releases are among the designs currently posterboy’d by US-born Japanese TV personality Dave Spector. But the main stars of this show are Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent, as a print reminiscent of the Keaton/Burton-era release joins other Batman and Superman imagery tiled upon the uppers of Chucks, Jack Purcells and Skidgrip slip-ons. The impact of the Converse x Missoni project can be felt through the now widespread use of intricate patterns on all kinds of sneakers, even in-house projects from the One Star. These new Converse First String Jack Purcell Johnnys have been dubbed ‘Kasuri’ for their resemblance to the Japanese weaving technique combining fibers dyed to create patterns, each featuring a staticky mix of neutral shades atop the classic ‘smile’ shelltoe sole. Hightops are white on the bottom and lows are gum, which implies how much your wardrobe choices frame how these are perceived once you grab a pair or two from Kith.

Converse First String is potentially the breakout division of the year across all major sneaker brands, having scored some superb collaborations to bolster the in-house efforts. These have come on several different silhouettes with more variety being added with some degree fo regularity, but you’ll never get away from the versatility and everyman appeal of the classic Chuck Taylor. The new Converse Chuck Taylor Bosey (including the brand new lowtop version) highlights the Holiday 2012 First String lineup, and is joined by Premium level renditions on the All Star (both ‘Post’ and ‘Glitz’ variants), as well as a couple of top-notch OGs in their own right in the Jack Purcell and Auckland Racer.
