There aren’t too many sneaker brands lodged in the American conscious the way that Converse is. A few quick numbers to prove their ubiquity: more than 550 million pairs have been produced since 1917 and, as of 2012, 60% of all Americans own or have owned a pair in their life. Encapsulating these factoids and a few more important milestones in the All-Star Brand’s history (including the most expensive pair they’ve ever made, those from the Missoni collection to the surprises of no-one) is this visual history, a chart plotting out their rise since they began peddling sneakers in 1908. John Varvatos could tell you first hand from a childhood in and around the Motor City just how cold it gets in the D, but judging by his collaborations with Converse, you’d think the man grew up in a coal mining town. The Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren alum loves to apply a slightly blackened vintage touch to his One Star collabos and this new John Varvatos x Converse Weapon Mid picks a perfect color scheme upon which to add that signature look. How can you tell the sneaker world has fully recovered from the purification that occurred in the wake of the 2008 global financial meltdown? Take for instance the increase of wild designs (not issued by Jeremy Scott), including a variety of animal print releases from all the major brands. The latest is a new Converse Weapon Street FSR Hi that manages to bridge the gap between timeless style and raw animalistic appeal thanks to the muted colorways that accompany these leopard print and furry hightops.
