Overall North American sales for comic books is up nearly 20% for 2012 according to the continent’s largest distributor, an upward swing that further demonstrates the popularity of summertime Hollywood blockbusters. Promotional cross-branding has also helped the DC Comics and Marvels of the world, as their iconography has shown up everywhere from the traditional action figures to more real-life examples you can show off during your daily fight against crime. The Avengers set new box office records when it debuted this May and the wider exposure granted by a PG-13 rating should keep it ahead of what’d otherwise be the most anticipated film of 2012. Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy finds its finale when The Dark Knight Rises on Friday, July 20th, and after the thirteen-minute TV featurette that just aired, there’s even that much more excitement surrounding the film. That’ll take another bump on the Wednesday before the premier as the latest DC Comics Batman x Converse Chuck Taylor All Star collection releases in colorways inspired by Batman and Tom Hardy’s Bane. Today’s news has been rather comic-friendly as we’ve shown you three colorways from the Marvel x Reebok Pack, but don’t count out the alternate universe known as DC Comics and its endeavor into kicks! We’ve seen plenty of DC Comics x Converse over the last few years, but this upcoming Fall/Winter release capsule refreshes the classic Batman and Superman personas with mural-like graphics on the Converse Chuck Taylor upper. Of course, this Summer will serve as quite the platform for DC Comics-based films, with Dark Knight Rises and Man Of Steel hitting the silver screen in the coming months. The ongoing team-up between DC Comics and Converse is one that just makes sense, a pairing of entities that have long since cemented their status in the realm of Americana. The latest looks from the collaboration see Wonder Woman and Killer Croc both getting their own pairs, with the classic canvas of the Chucks used quite literally as a canvas for the graphic approach. The majority of the releases from the DC Comics x Converse project we’ve seen so far have stayed true to the comic book look, with colorful graphics that grab at your attention. If you’re looking for something more subtle, check out the ‘Riddler’ release for the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star shown here. Paying tribute to the Batman villain of the same name, these come in a premium leather dipped in the same gooey green that The Riddler sports in the comics. The last decade has proven a boon to the comic book industry, everything from advances in CGI and internet technologies helping to reunite the scene around eye-popping new films to a litany of cross-branded promotional items. DC Comics superheros have been associated with the sneaker game since the Nike SB Dunk Mid ‘Batman’ dropped back in 2008, but it’s only in the last few months we’ve seen them reach out for official collaborations like the recently unveiled Bounty Hunter x Masterpiece collection. DC’s been at it for over seventy-five years now so it’s fitting that with their new Converse Chuck Taylor All Star pack, the publishers were able to align their brand with a model that’s been around even longer. Airwalk is still widely remembered for their ’80s and ’90s classics like those profiled in Complex’s recent Top 50 Skate Shoes list but a few high-profile collaborations have launched the circle-a back into the spotlight in recent years.
