What Do You Think?: The Next Signature Basketball Athlete

March 28th, 2013 by | 16 comments

sig shoe what do you think What Do You Think?: The Next Signature Basketball Athlete

Take a look at the NBA players that have signature shoes today and it’s clear that being a signature athlete requires the perfect alignment of skill, charisma, sheer location of employment, and a few other things that make a human into a superstar. LeBron, Kobe, Melo, CP3, Wade, and D-Rose all play in major markets where the opportunity for extensive media coverage is all but guaranteed, with Kevin Durant being the one industry anomaly of being a highly successful signature athlete playing in a small-market city; this seems like a healthy list that should hold us down for a few years, but being content only means one thing –  there is room for more.

The landscape of sneaker brands is unique in that some of these labels have become flexible with who they choose to represent their brands on that “face of the brand” tier. Take up-and-coming Under Armour for example; their lone signature athlete is Brandon Jennings, but with DeAndre Jordan playing in a huge market and his insane dunk placing some added spice to his shoes, the neophytic UA label has experienced some added exposure as the prime “indie” brand. While the responsbility that comes with being a signature athlete is something that can be compromised, Nike, Jordan Brand, adidas, Li-Ning, and Under Armour – the major brands in the basketball category – all have the room to fit in a new guy on the team.

But is it even time to welcome a new name to the sneaker industry? There’s no doubt that player names play a large part in shaping consumer tendencies, and with Kobe Bryant nearing retirement every passing year, LeBron well on his way to signature shoe history for Nike, KD well-ingrained in the Nike’s historical fibers, and D-Rose sitting prettily with a life-time contract, it’s a ripe-enough time for a fresh name to be thrown into the mix. Each brand across the board has a select group of athletes to represent their non-signature models, but is anyone ready to step up? We’ve narrowed down a list of the top candidates that may be worthy of sig-shoe distinction, so check out our list below and chime in with your opinions on this latest installment of What Do You Think?.

We’ve seen extensive looks at the signature installments of the 2012 Nike Basketball All-Star kicks, but you knew that once the weekend came around there would be some interesting PE’s popping up to liven things up a bit. These Hyperdunk 2011 Lows made for New Jersey Nets star point guard, Deron Williams, definitely do just that. Working in the “Galaxy” theme seen on a variety of Nike B-Ball and NSW All-Star releases, these Hyperdunk Lows sport the galactic graphic on the lining, ankle and laces, combining with the starry midsole and glow in the dark translucent outsole to easily make these a worthy offering to the group. Expect to see Deron in these over the weekend and stay tuned for more All-Star PE heat coming your way. via NJ Nets/DeronWilliams

nike unveils usab uniforms and footwear 1 Nike Unveils USAB Hyper Elite Uniforms + Footwear

Nike’s history at the Olympic Games has been impressive to say the least; a look at the Team USAB ‘Dream Team’ Collection from just a few moments ago will show you that the patriotic U.S.A. colorways will only accentuate the beauty and bravado of a sneaker or a piece of apparel, and this viewing of the 2012 Team USAB Footwear and Uniform Collection should be affirmation that Nike’s relevance to the biggest international sports stage in the world will only grow stronger.

Here is a first look at the Team USAB Footwear and Uniform Collection by Nike Basketball; the Nike Hyperdunk 2012, which we unveiled earlier, will be the anchor of Team USA’s footwear (modeled by LeBron James and Deron Williams), joined by signature models of the Nike Zoom Kobe VII, and the Nike Zoom KD IV. Just where does Deron Williams fit into ‘Linsanity’? With the Nets being very close to the Lin-led sensation at Madison Square Garden, they’re definitely feeling the snub by the local news media, but with the Nets and D-Will being Jeremy Lin’s first victims of this unprecedented streak of greatness, at least they got some press, right? But before we can crown Lin as an elite point guard, he needs to produces a full season of top-flight performance, similar to how Deron Williams has for six seasons. D-Will is good for 20 and 8 night-in and night-out, with the Nike Zoom Hyperfuse 2011 Low being his weapon of choice. You can cop this ‘PE’ release right now on Eastbay so take a look at the extra shot below and let us know what you think.

Nike Zoom Hyperdunk 2011 Low – Deron Williams Home PE

Among the biggest single events from the last and arguably best ever NBA regular season was the Nets-Jazz trade that sent All-Star point guard Deron Williams to New Jersey just in time for a new building and possibly a new superstar teammate or two.  But the struggling Nets haven’t been able to pry Dwight Howard away from Orlando and currently sit on the outside of the Eastern Conference playoff hunt, so at least D-Will has a solid rotation of Nike Basketball player exclusives to provide some stability during these trying times.  This Nike Zoom Hyperdunk 2011 Low would suitably match any of the NJN uniforms, but despite the relatively dark character of this grey and navy design, they were built to facilitate home games in Newark.  Take a look at what might be the very last PE ever produced for games at Prudential Center, and grab yours now from Eastbay.
