The whole superhero theme has been a popular one in the custom sneaker scene for a while now, helped out no small amount by the new millennium string of Hollywood smash flicks dipping into the DC and Marvel worlds. Iron Man has emerged a particularly beloved character, which has of course resulted in a long string of sneaks sporting his armored look. This, the Nike Dunk High “Metal Guy”, appears to be another but we’re told all similarities are merely coincidental. See the Nike Dunk High piece, light up tongue and all, after the jump and then tell us your feelings on this Diversitile & 3R Customs team up.

Nike Dunk High “Frankenstein” Customs by Diversitile

nike dunk high frankenstein customs Nike Dunk High Frankenstein Customs by Diversitile

In the sneakerhead world, the closest thing to Dr. Frankenstein’s legendary monster would have to be Nike’s various ‘What the . . . ‘ colorways that combine elements from various notable colorways into one neckbreaking melange.  This year saw a marked rise in such styles as both Nike Basketball and serious customizers utilized this approach on the LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant signatures.  A bit closer to Mary Shelley on the basketball timeline is the Nike Dunk High (whose lowtop brother brought the world its first ‘What the’), and this new Frankenstein Dunk by Diversitile sticks to the legend by offering a piecemeal look complete with what looks like a (salvaged) human brain peeking through the heel.  These were lovingly crafted with tons of details you’ll need to zoom in to fully appreciate, so have a closer look below and let us know where this slightly frightening custom Dunk ranks against Diversitile’s other notable works.

The Nike Dunk High might be the ultimate team-based shoe, as the most memorable original and Retro’ed set is undoubtedly the ‘Be True To Your School’ Pack. These are available now at the Diversitile store, but if you don’t see your favorite team represented, hit up Diversitile directly as he will gladly design one for your squad.

Nike Dunk High ‘Nightmare’ Customs by Diversitile

nike dunk high nightmare customs by diversitile summary Nike Dunk High Nightmare Customs by Diversitile

During a 2011 when the biggest trend in custom sneakers has been stealing colorways and applying them to new models, Diversitile‘s work remains a level above.  This latest handcrafted design is the closest he’s come to an outright copy of something Nike had already issued, this new Nike Dunk High ’Nightmare’ is inspired by the same dream-inhabiting serial killer who inspired the unreleased Dunk Low SB ‘Freddy Krueger’.  This hightop is considerably more graphic in its application of Wes Craven’s scissorhanded maniac, key elements including a razor-edged Swoosh that ’cause’ blood all over the side panels plus a toebox matching Freddy’s facial deformities.  The level of detail here is on par with Diversitile’s other standouts including the ‘Bumblebee’ and ‘Child’s Play’ Dunk Highs; which is his best film-inspired ‘fan fiction?  Click through to see more angles and stick with Sneaker News for the latest and greatest custom kicks.

If you were creating a project with dual automobile and insect themes, you’d have to be working with something related to the Volkswagen Beetle, right?  Well, that was probably the case until Michael Bay’s Transformers helped to launch the redesigned Chevrolet Camero in 2007, using the oft yellow sports car as the new basis for the OG Autobot, Bumblebee.  And by this point, the inspiration behind Diversitile’s Nike Dunk High ‘Bumble Bee’ custom should be clear, its ‘metal’-on-yellow look something like a look into the future where ODB is resurrected in a cyborg skeleton to rejoin the Wu-Tang Clan.  Clcik through to see some more angles and let us know how Diversitile‘s latest design compare to his best and the other custom sneakers we’ve profiled here on Sneaker News.
