Over the last few years, we’ve seen an influx of great footwear releases led by sports simulation-game magnate EA Sports in the form of special editions, player exclusives, and much more. The overlap between kicks and gaming is larger than you might think, and and thusly EA Sports evolved itself into much more than a gaming brand and into a lifestyle label; it’s connection with Nike and footwear brands in general goes back longer than you might be aware of, even teaming with Nike with the Air Force II back in 2003. Sneaker News got the opportunity to chat with EA Sports VP of Brand Marketing Chris Erb (a major sneakerhead himself) and discuss the past, present, and future of EA’s relationship with Nike.

You don’t exactly think of dropped guaranteed touchdowns and a preseason cut when thinking of Hall of Fame wideouts, but that’s exactly the image Terrell Owens left us with after departing from the Seattle Seahawks. TO has scored more touchdowns than all but one pass catcher in NFL history, and with that guy considered the greatest of all time, you’ve gotta feel like 81 will have his tearful day at the Canton podium some day soon.
The man whose touchdown record he chased in vain is paired with arguably the best WR doing it today in a new duo of LunarLon cushioned crosstrainers released in conjunction with the latest Madden franchise release. The EA Sports x Nike Lunar TR1+ celebrates the statistically incomparable Jerry Rice as the ‘Greatest of All Time’ on a 49ers-like red and gold getup, while the hottest hands in the league show up on Calvin ‘Megatron’ Johnson‘s Detroit blue edition. These are packaged in deluxe foam-lined boxes and feature their namesake athletes flanking the footbeds, and will be available at the Toronto and Las Vegas Niketown locations as well as Willowbrook, NJ’s Champs Sports (a curious selection that leaves the two associated cities out in the cold) coming up on Saturday, September 1st. Let us know which came out better once you’ve seen more photos below and stick with Sneaker News to see if a wider release is to follow.

Well you didn’t think they were going to leave Madden NFL ’13 out of the equation did you? Apparently unfazed by the threat of the Madden Curse, Calvin Johnson has been selected as the cover boy for this year’s edition of the uber popular video game, an honor he gets to double down on thanks to this release featuring his likeness on the insole. Also cooked up is a Jerry Rice themed pair as a nod to his playable status in the game’s group of legends, the sneakers sporting the ‘GOAT’ acronym on back – but is EA Sports serving up a debate of who exactly is the greatest WR of all-time? Freehand Profit is back at it with his controversial creations, this time giving the Edward Scissorhands treatment to a pair of the EA Sports adorned Nike Air Trainer 1.3 that dropped last summer. Actually this time around he went ahead and utilized three pairs for his work, spinning the silhouette appropriately enough into a football helmet rather than his trademark gas-mask. The EA Sports commissioned piece sort of doubles as a historical marker of the Nike x NFL agreement, embodying the union of the National Football league and the Swoosh team. Click through to check out the EA Sports x Freehand Profit Nike Trainer 1.3 Max football helmet and stay tuned with Sneaker News just in case someone straps up in this piece of gear come NFL season.

It featured the all-new Nike Trainer 1.3 design constructed of materials inspired by the classic letterman jacket, which some view as a badge of honor in athletic circles. These are set for a limited release on July 12th, coinciding with the release of EA Sports NCAA Football ’12, EA’s latest installment in the college football simulation game franchise.
