Just another pair of the Air Jordan XIII ‘Bred’ from this weekend’s retro release? Nope, what you’re looking at is an Air Jordan XIII player exclusive made for one Eddie Jones. The color combo comes from his first stint with the Miami Heat back in the 2000-2005 range. The upgrade comes in the form of the personalized tongue area ‘E. Eddie Jones had the potential of winning soeveral NBA Championships with Shaq until a trade to Charlotte for some dude named Kobe ended Jones’ Lakers story. Instead, he went on to be a key veteran in a number of up-and-coming teams, and even came close to reaching the Finals when he was reunited with Shaq in Miami. Eddie then departed the Heat during the 2005 off-season, but Miami went on to win a title without him during the season that immediately followed. The story of Eddie Jones: great veteran and scorer at the wrong place at the wrong time. At least he has some sick Air Jordan PEs, though! Many sneakerheads today probably aren’t aware of the short-lived legacy of Eddie Jones – the Temple Owl alumni who was to be the future of the Los Angeles Lakers until a certain high-school phenom showed up on the bench. Eddie was drafted by the Lakers in that stacked ’94 draft class and got off on a quick start, establishing himself as one of the best ‘finesse’ shooting guards in the entire league. Just when Eddie was entering his prime, the Lakers traded him away to the Charlotte Hornets to make room for Kobe Bryant, who at that point deserved a starting spot; the three-guard rotation simply did not work, and it was time for Eddie to move on to different pastures. He was then traded from the Hornets to the Heat, where he was once again traded away to make room for a budding star (this time it was Dwyane Wade). During his tenure with the Heat, Jordan Brand outfitted E-Jones with this PE colorway of the Air Jordan XIII – just one of many of the Air Jordan Retro PEs that we’ve showcased here on Sneaker News before. It’s got a simple tonal white upper with red trimmings on the inner lining, outsole, and branding for a clean and simple appeal perfect for that Miami climate. Eddie Jones (and his mustache) was one of the first members of Jordan Brand, as he and Michael Finley were featured in an advertisement for the Air Jordan XVI. His addition to the Jordan Brand roster came when the Temple alumni was heating up his NBA career while gaining some league-wide popularity (anyone remember his Taco Bell commercial with Shaq, who suffered from ‘Taco Neck’), and since then, he’s been proudly represented the brand with Jordan Brand footwear and Air Jordan PEs. Here’s a look at an ‘Away’ PE colorway of the Air Jordan V that Eddie Jones wore during his Memphis Grizzlies days; the colorway is similar to the Black/University Blue Retro that dropped during Jones’ tenure as a Grizzly. Jones has had a successful career, but it’s unfortunate that he wasn’t a part of four potential NBA Championships; he was traded away by the Lakers to make room for Kobe in the starting line-up, and left Miami before they won in 2006.
