Why didn’t Charles Barkley ever run for governor of Alabama? Could it have been that he didn’t want to forego that sweet sweet royalty money he rakes in from Nike Sportswear retros? Such was the case with Sacramento mayor Kevin Johnson, the three-time NBA All-Star who had Fila dole out his part of an upcoming bringback to a couple of non-profits to avoid any conflict with his public duties. So interestingly enough, the Fila KJ7 in the original Phoenix Suns colorway will help the effort to build a new downtown arena in California’s capital city, Johnson’s hometown. It was in PHX where KJ made his mark on the NBA, and the Suns makeup of his first ever signature shoe is coming back on Thursday to stores like Concepts.

Fila will continue to draw on their back catalog of basketball silhouettes with the retro treatment of Kevin Johnson’s Fila KJ7 sneaker. Of course the 3-time NBA All Star is currently serving as the mayor of Sacramento, which means that the re-issue should put him at the top of the heap as far as politicians with a mean sneaker game (Sorry Barack). The Fila KJ7 is set to make its return for the 2014 NBA All-Star game in both a Phoenix Suns colorway paying tribute to Johnson’s old squad and a Sacramento Kings one that nods to his current home.
