Fila’s recent announcement of their retro revival definitely got the attention of 90′s heads, with a recent preview during a media event providing some insight as to what should be expected from the now South Korean owned brand. To help launch the entire throwback line, Fila has arranged the OG Black Pack, highlighting four models in a clean black/white colorway. The OG Black Pack will include four of the brands original models – The Cage, ’96, F-13, and the Original Fitness – and will hit Fila retailers on March 21st, so check out the Fila ’96 and Cage below and we’ll hit you with more updates as they arrive.

Fila has plenty of goodies in store for 2013, with the pairs that are right around the corner resurrecting both their lowtop lifestyle models of old as well as some of their celebrated hooping models. Shown here is a crop including the Fila 96, the Fila F-13, the Fila Cage (With one of the pairs sporting a ‘Shredder’ colorway to join in on the TMNT collalb), and the Fila Original Tennis. The retro sneaker market has been more and more welcoming of basketball bring-backs as of late, making now as good a time as any for the the Italian sportswear giant Fila to re-introduce the world to some of their more revered silhouettes. Jerry Stackhouse is back in the mix with the Fila Stack Mid, Grant Hill’s model is back under the new ’96′ moniker, and The Cage that briefly popped up in 2012 will be sticking around as well. Sneaker News was privy to a recent preview featuring all of these, as well as a healthy mixture of upcoming models that end up more on the lifestyle side (including some amazing ‘Knicks’ looks). Longtime fans were happy to see Michael Bay’s TMNT reboot hit the cutting room floor in full after the blow-em-up director let it be known that Nickeleodeon’s newest acquisition had alien origins. And with the next Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles flick at least two years away, it’s good to know there’s some dope Ninja Turtles gear on deck to fill the void. This collaboration is a double throwback with two of intermittently popular Italian label Fila’s classic silos, as the iconic FX-100 joins a TMNT x Fila Cage remake for two holiday season releases whose timing and limited numbering have you up against a number of factors (which, while challenging, are certain to improve their merits as investment pieces). Fila has long been well-known for their classic tennis shoes and velvety warm-up suits, but people seem to forget that during the early/mid 90′s, the Italian brand was a very strong competitor in the basketball category as well. Best known for signature models for NBA stars Grant Hill and Jerry Stackhouse, Fila captured a nice chunk of the b-ball market at the time, but aside from the sigs, perhaps the most beloved offering of them all was The Cage. The shoe took the Fila basketball line in a bold new direction that incorporated a progressive new take on the traditional Fila aesthetic, while pushing the limits of footwear design and innovation with the foam “cage” piece around the ankle. Lost in obscurity for almost 20 years, Fila’s cult favorite, The Cage, is finally making its way back to store shelves in 2012, so to get the full story on the comeback, we sat down with Fila’s lifestyle footwear product manager, Louis W. Follow that up with news of the Fila Cage Runner release not a week ago, and you’re left with more Fila Retro presence in 2012 than in the last few years combined! Here we have a look at three of the upcoming colorways as well as some detailed angles of The Cage, which gained its name for the foam-cage ankle. If you weren’t wearing chunky high-tops during the early 90′s, you were probably living under a rock. The early 90′s is considered by some to be one of the greatest eras of sneakers thanks to the Nike Training boom, the championship era of the Air Jordan legacy, and of course, the shared popularity of brands not named Nike. It was a period where these somewhat cumbersome and visually appealing high-top sneakers were king, and the Fila ‘The Cage’ was amidst the booming trend of bulky kicks. The ‘Cage’, noted for its rugged appearance, is highlighted by its foam cage ankle brace (not rubber as others have claimed). Although a bit behind in the Retro sneaker movement, Fila is uncaging its beast this coming Spring 2012 season with a nice collection of colorways of the Fila The Cage.
