Gary Payton’s name has been in the mouth of quite a few more sneakerheads recently thanks to the retro resurgence of his Nike Air Zoom Flight ’98 “The Glove” silhouette. The man himself has also been rather resurgent-for instance he recently popped up at a Foot Locker spot out in Europe to do an in-store event centering around the rebirth of The Gloves. Get with us after the break for a photo set from the event and let us know if you’re happy to hear that Gary Payton is making the rounds to help give some of the youngins better context as far as his sneakers are concerned.

You might not have seen it after being busy celebrating yesterday and possibly lining up for today’s releases, but it was the last of five NBA games that was this year’s best Christmas tip.  A Cali clash between the Warriors and Clippers went down to the wire in the Bay Area, with Oakland native Gary Payton holding it down in his hometown alongside sons Gary Jr. and Julian as well as a family friend, along with The Glove himself, all rocking the namesake shoes.  GP’s three sons wore different Nike Air Zoom Flight The Glove colorways, while the eldest Payton opted for the first zip-shrouded AF1 The Glove.  Let us know who rocked it best once you’ve seen more below and stick with Sneaker News because there are still more Zoom Flight The Glove release dates coming up here in the not too distant future.

Gary Payton’s signature shoe is about to get its first retro treatment, but if you’ve been reading Sneaker News enough to keep up with the Air Zoom Flight, you might already know that ‘The Glove’ moved on to Jordan Brand toward the end of his NBA career.  Here’s an Air Jordan XII PE that could have been a home colorway for each of the three teams with whom he reached the NBA Finals.  The white/yellow combo was crafted during Payton’s season with the Los Angeles Lakers.  He’ll be officially inducted into the Hall of Fame this fall, and you can commemorate one of the great careers with this game-worn player exclusive available for a short time from kick_culture on eBay.

With Gary Payton’s name on deck to be the next household name in Retro kicks, why not take a look back at some of the highlights of his sneaker career? “The Glove” is known for his short yet influential stint with Nike in the late-90s and early-2000s, but his time as a Jordan Brand athlete is generally overlooked, although we do show an occasional GP PE from time to time. This Air Jordan XIX was made for Payton while he was with the Lakers (the team that was supposed to win the Title) and intended to be an All-Star PE, but Payton was left out of the 2004 team. Are you excited for the comeback of “The Glove” signature line? Let us know in the comments area and check out this rare PE from 4-quarters on eBay.

With the return of the Kamikaze II coming in just a couple of weeks and the “Glove” confirmed a return, memories of 90′s basketball and the exciting duo known as “Kemp and Payton” keep rising up. With that in mind, let’s take a look back at one of Payton’s more interesting eras of NBA play – his short stint with the Boston Celtics; during that time, GP was indeed a Jordan Brand athlete, with these great Player Exclusive colorways being composed just for the loud-mouthed point guard to wear during games like this Air Jordan XIX (and we’ve already shown you the ‘Away’ version). Check out this crisp new DS pair below and peep the asking price from dependablejay on eBay.

Gary Payton Discusses Future Releases at Nike Headquarters

Gary payton nike sportswear Gary Payton Discusses Future Releases at Nike Headquarters

2013 is going to be one helluva year for 90′s basketball fans who adored the Seattle Supersonics (and later, just Sonics). Why? Because the franchise’s two most iconic players in Gary ‘The Glove’ Payton and Shawn ‘Reignman’ Kemp will have their best sneakers re-issued this year. Along with Reebok’s comeback with the upcoming Kamikaze II, Nike Basketball is set to retro the Nike Zoom Flight ’98 (simply referred to as ‘The Glove‘) which is now confirmed by GP to be an October 2013 release.

Recently, Gary Payton was at Beaverton’s Nike HQ in a meeting with Nike Sportswear’s Gentry Humphrey and Marc Dolce to discuss the future of The Glove, but that only has us wondering if Payton’s line will receive any sort of Penny/Barkley treatment in terms of Retros, new colorways, and perhaps a hybrid model somewhere down the line. Outside of the Glove, nothing’s been confirmed yet (although we should point out the Nike Air Zoom Payton II, Air Zoom Payton III, Air Zoom Payton IV, and another classic from that era in the Nike Air Hawk Flight and Nike Air Maestro ’96 on that glorious table spread). Your thoughts on the future of the Nike Glove line? Chime in below.
