Gary payton nike sportswear Gary Payton Discusses Future Releases at Nike Headquarters

2013 is going to be one helluva year for 90′s basketball fans who adored the Seattle Supersonics (and later, just Sonics). Why? Because the franchise’s two most iconic players in Gary ‘The Glove’ Payton and Shawn ‘Reignman’ Kemp will have their best sneakers re-issued this year. Along with Reebok’s comeback with the upcoming Kamikaze II, Nike Basketball is set to retro the Nike Zoom Flight ’98 (simply referred to as ‘The Glove‘) which is now confirmed by GP to be an October 2013 release.

Recently, Gary Payton was at Beaverton’s Nike HQ in a meeting with Nike Sportswear’s Gentry Humphrey and Marc Dolce to discuss the future of The Glove, but that only has us wondering if Payton’s line will receive any sort of Penny/Barkley treatment in terms of Retros, new colorways, and perhaps a hybrid model somewhere down the line. Outside of the Glove, nothing’s been confirmed yet (although we should point out the Nike Air Zoom Payton II, Air Zoom Payton III, Air Zoom Payton IV, and another classic from that era in the Nike Air Hawk Flight and Nike Air Maestro ’96 on that glorious table spread). Your thoughts on the future of the Nike Glove line? Chime in below.

Spotted during the NBA Jam Live event in China (a six-day NBA showcase presenting some goodies of the American sport to the Chinese fanbase) was Gary Payton wearing the Nike Zoom Flight ’98 ‘The Glove’ in a white PE colorway (you can see his classic ’20′ jersey stitched on the upper). Last November, during a quick chat with a fan, Payton alluded to a Retro release of ‘The Glove’ for the Holiday 2012 season, and although we haven’t come across any updates as of yet, we’ll certainly keep you in the necessary loop. Also present at the event were NBA stars Brandon Jennings and DeMar DeRozan, some up-and-coming NBDL players, and fellow 90′s legend Horace Grant! Exemplifying Gary Payton’s bravado and lock-down defense on the court, Nike Basketball created ‘The Glove’, aka the Nike Zoom Flight ’98. Undoubtedly one of the most advanced sneakers of its time, ‘The Glove’ featured the unique ‘Monkey Paw’ stability cage and an upper shroud that was released via the off-center zipper. During a recent autograph signing, Gary Payton himself recalled the Zoom Flight ’98 as his favorite signature shoe, and even noted that Nike will re-release the shoe in October of 2012. Even last year, Payton was spotted wearing the Zoom Flight ’98 overseas, although the nature of the shoe (OG or a Retro sample) wasn’t confirmed. Excited? Check out the video after the jump for confirmation from GP himself and let us know if you’re excited at this release.

Despite being featured on a nation advertisement for the Air Jordan XIX, Gary Payton is often forgotten as a Jordan Brand athlete. It was that funky era for Jordan Brand, which fell after Michael’s retirement from the Wizards and his awkward ousting as the President of Team Operations, but that didn’t mean that innovation and design was still the focus of the Air Jordan. The Air Jordan XIX, at the time, was the lightest Air Jordan ever made, and it fit the game of the defensive-minded floor-general Gary Payton; we’ve shown you these Air Jordan XII Player Exclusives before, but this particular is not only game-worn, but also autographed by The Glove himself. Check out these images below and to place your bid or offer, hit up the auction from anonymussole on eBay.

When considering the greatest point guards of all-time, Gary Payton’s name should not be left out of the discussion. The only thing as aggressive as his man-to-man defense was his loud mouth, but let’s not forget that he was a perennial 20-a-game scorer while compiling plenty of assists, a healthy amount of rebounds, and a few steals per game. During the tail end of his career, Payton accepted a diminshed role with hopes of winning a championship ring, joining the powerhouse Los Angeles Lakers for one season and the Miami Heat after a one-year stint in Boston. Riding the coattails of Shaq and Dwyane Wade en route to his first ever NBA Championship. During his time in Boston, Gary Payton, who was a Jordan Brand athlete, wore this Air Jordan XIX SE in a Black/Gold/Green colorway, which featured ‘GP’ and ’20′ on the heels. ‘The Glove’ will forever be remembered as one of the most complete players in NBA history with a solid signature line of sneakers to boot, so if you want to own this piece of GP memorabilia spotted by Complex, grab these rare PEs from ronnskizzle on eBay.

The man known as ‘The Glove’ had an arsenal of weapons that he shrewdly employed during his career, but it’s his loudmouth trash-talking that most player might remember him for. Even in our image above, you see Gary about to mutter something (looks like it starts with the letter F) to Michael Jordan, when the Sonics reached the NBA Finals and defeated the Bulls twice before eventually losing the series. Throughout Gary Payton’s career, he’s always been decked out in some great Nike Basketball shoes as well as Air Jordan PEs (you might recall him being featured in a commercial for the Air Jordan XIX). His ‘Glove’ signature line is widely acclaimed and fans are dying for a Retro release, but until that happens, check out Payton’s greatest sneaker moments below, which include the Air Jordan XII PE, various sig shoe PEs, and the Nike Zoom Ultraflight, and head to Complex for the entire feature.
