Converse has plenty of premium treatments up their sleeves for Spring/Summer of 2013 thanks to the likes of the John Varvatos and Marimekko collaborations sticking around. The JV side of things will continue its vintage, zipper laden look via models like the Converse JV Weapon Mid and the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star. On the more cutesy end of the spectrum are the Marimekko pairs, which rely on rather bright shapes and patterns to set them apart. John Varvatos could tell you first hand from a childhood in and around the Motor City just how cold it gets in the D, but judging by his collaborations with Converse, you’d think the man grew up in a coal mining town. The Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren alum loves to apply a slightly blackened vintage touch to his One Star collabos and this new John Varvatos x Converse Weapon Mid picks a perfect color scheme upon which to add that signature look. Sneaker News just showed you the Converse Premium Collection for fall 2012, and within were previews of John Varvatos’ latest efforts for the One Star. Key among these is a style the likes of which we’ve seen offered by Varvatos on other models, but never quite like this. The John Varvatos x Converse Chuck Taylor Zip Hi is a black leather look that applies its zipper to the lower ankle collar, which gives you the option to quickly remove the top two eyelets in favor of a more ‘Ox’-leaning All Star. The black leather is top-notch as always to signal that blackened details merely denote premium vintage quality, and you’ll find them available now at select Converse stores like CNCPTS.

John Varvatos’ collaboration with Converse will remain popular into the forseeable future thanks to subtle variations like these that reflect his signature aesthetic while allowing for multiple degrees of progress. These new drops pair a couple of Converse All Star Laceless Hi designs cast in canvas with two lowtops done mostly in that same material. But the overall effect of the Sprint Grip Ox is decidedly different thanks to a leather wrap around the sole and tonal and textural contrasts thanks to suede toes.
