What Do You Think?: The Next Signature Basketball Athlete

sig shoe what do you think What Do You Think?: The Next Signature Basketball Athlete

Take a look at the NBA players that have signature shoes today and it’s clear that being a signature athlete requires the perfect alignment of skill, charisma, sheer location of employment, and a few other things that make a human into a superstar. LeBron, Kobe, Melo, CP3, Wade, and D-Rose all play in major markets where the opportunity for extensive media coverage is all but guaranteed, with Kevin Durant being the one industry anomaly of being a highly successful signature athlete playing in a small-market city; this seems like a healthy list that should hold us down for a few years, but being content only means one thing –  there is room for more.

The landscape of sneaker brands is unique in that some of these labels have become flexible with who they choose to represent their brands on that “face of the brand” tier. Take up-and-coming Under Armour for example; their lone signature athlete is Brandon Jennings, but with DeAndre Jordan playing in a huge market and his insane dunk placing some added spice to his shoes, the neophytic UA label has experienced some added exposure as the prime “indie” brand. While the responsbility that comes with being a signature athlete is something that can be compromised, Nike, Jordan Brand, adidas, Li-Ning, and Under Armour – the major brands in the basketball category – all have the room to fit in a new guy on the team.

But is it even time to welcome a new name to the sneaker industry? There’s no doubt that player names play a large part in shaping consumer tendencies, and with Kobe Bryant nearing retirement every passing year, LeBron well on his way to signature shoe history for Nike, KD well-ingrained in the Nike’s historical fibers, and D-Rose sitting prettily with a life-time contract, it’s a ripe-enough time for a fresh name to be thrown into the mix. Each brand across the board has a select group of athletes to represent their non-signature models, but is anyone ready to step up? We’ve narrowed down a list of the top candidates that may be worthy of sig-shoe distinction, so check out our list below and chime in with your opinions on this latest installment of What Do You Think?.

adidas Signs John Wall

“Well, that escalated quickly.” – Ron Burgundy

Earlier today, it was reported by Sneaker News that John Wall, the original face of Reebok Zig Basketball shoes, was seen wearing the adidas Top Ten 2000 during a pre-game practice. Wall himself confirmed that this was no accident, as he just tweeted out his official newfound allegiance with adidas Basketball. Joining a star-studded roster of signature athletes like Derrick Rose and Dwight Howard as well as some up-and-coming guards like Ricky Rubio and Iman Shumpert, the addition of Wall, who is set to make his 2012-2013 NBA Season debut son, should definitely be a “plus” for adidas. Your thoughts on the unofficial NBA Dougie moving to the three stripes? Let us know if you think Wall’s move to adidas forces any shift of power and we’ll keep you updated on the adidas x John Wall front.

John Wall Practices in adidas Top Ten 2000

john wall joins adidas John Wall Practices in adidas Top Ten 2000

Reebok’s first major comeback move didn’t involve the Questions or Swizz Beatz’ new position at the helm, but with the impressive signing of #1 Draft Pick John Wall. The guard for the Washington Wizards was quickly given his own signature line with Zig technology at its core, but a recent development has shed some light on perhaps the latest trace of movement in the sneaker company radar. John Wall was spotted today at Wizards practice wearing a pair of the adidas Top Ten 2000 and not one of his Reebok signature shoes; with a general disinterest in the Zig Basketball models and what some may call Wall’s failure to meet expectations as the “future” of the NBA point guard position, this likely signifies the end of Reebok’s partnership with John Wall and hints at a subsequent signing with adidas Basketball. Stay tuned to Sneaker News for more updates on this latest piece of sneaker company free agency news and let us know what you think about Wall’s history of Reebok signature shoes.

Reebok make a major splash in the basketball market when it signed the former number-one overall selection of the 2009 NBA Draft, and since then, Wall has built up a nice start to his career with the upstart Wizards, which now features a nice young nucleus that Wall can help build. Reebok John Wall Zig Escape Samples

reebok john wall zig escape samples 1 Reebok John Wall Zig Escape Samples

Just how much potential has John Wall’s third Reebok signature sneaker shown in its early preview stages?  How about comparing last year’s lottery-bound Flip Saunders-axing stumble of a season to a playoff appearance in the newly reinvigorated Eastern Conference?  Put simply, the Reebok Zig Escape is the most aesthetically pleasing JW11 sig yet, and that’s thanks to both an improved upper design and more expressive colorways than the Slash or Encore.  Today we have some seriously impressive Zig Encore samples that include a pixelated UNC-meets-Space Invaders getup, one offering a cartoonish blast in colors reminiscent of the original Wiz uniforms, a third USA colorup that could be a preview of gold medals to come for the soon-to-turn 22 year-old point guard, and a native blend that couples monochromatic patterns with a colorful sockliner and gum rubber sole.  Wall’s trademark RBKs seem to have made ‘the leap’ and coincide with a strong rebound for the Vector brand; examine a huge gallery of each design after the jump and stick with Sneaker News for US release info.
