JORDAN SON OF MARS The Jordan Son of Mars is a hybrid design from Jordan Brand in the same vein as the Jordan Spiz’ike. The name references Spike Lee’s “Mars Blackmon” character frequently featured in Air Jordan ad spots, with the sneaker itself grabbing design elements from all of the Air Jordan models Spike played a part in promoting: the Air Jordan III, IV, V, VI, and XX.

Sometimes it’s minute touches that make a shoe turn out better than expected. Of course with the ‘Bordeaux’ base, you’re already off to a good start, but Jordan Brand decided on punching up this colorway with the hint of minty green on the rubber piece of the outsole. It’s these minor details that cause the “double-take” (the good kind) and end up playing a much larger role, so is this hint of green the right touch for you? What we’ve learned from the Spiz’ike and earlier colorways of the Jordan Brand hybrid pictured above over the past few years, is that Jordanheads are meticulous when it comes to scrutinizing hybrid designs, but if you’re careful with signature elements from the golden era, greatness is indeed possible. The Jordan Son of Mars has impressed in each colorup to date, this new Nuggets-ish style reminding us that while all of the styles referenced in its design were made famous in Chicago, Michael wrapped up his career with a victory lap in the nation’s Capital. The ‘Stealth’ Son of Mars hits the shelves at retailers like Social Status this Saturday, August 11th, and you can see a new crop of images after the jump below.

Spike Lee‘s ‘Mookie’ from ‘Do The Right Thing‘was brought back to life 20 years later with ‘Red Hook Summer’, Spike Lee’s latest film that tells the story of a young boy’s experience in the Red Hook projects one summer. The character of Mookie, who reprised his role in this film (still delivering Sal’s pizza), is the center of this latest custom sneaker; designed with ‘Red Hook Summer’ in mind and Mookie at heart, sneaker customizer Van Monroe colors up the Jordan Son Of Mars with the film’s billboard colors and a special edition ‘Sal’s Pizza’ shoebox for that true Mookie flavor. A recent overview of Jordan Brand’s September output featured a number of ‘wine’-based colorways. There was the Air Jordan 1 and Retro V.1 ‘Bordeaux’, and even a ‘Port Wine’ colorway of other Lifestyle anchors in the Jordan Flight 23 AC and After Game II. That makes this mid-September arrival of the Jordan Son Of Mars all the more fitting, as we get yet another look at the ‘Bordeaux’ Son Of Mars with that perfect hint of aqua blue on the outsole. Ever since the lighter ‘Prism Blue’ colorway leapfrogged it back in June this Jordan Son of Mars combo has been pretty quiet. It pops up again today out of nowhere, with some official images and a release date attached. The Jordan Son of Mars pictured will hit Jordan Brand accounts on August 11th, continuing to stir up the established palette in a time that should prove pretty tumultuous for those attached to the more traditional of Air Jordan colors. Yes Father’s Day is right around the corner (Sunday, don’t forget) but the day before will belong to the sons in Jordan Brand’s case. More specifically the Son of Mars, which is hitting the shelves in this all new colorway as of tomorrow. And while the GS sneakers do feature some pretty bright tones both on the lining and the Jumpman logo hits the pair overall isn’t too far off from the whole white/cement look, with not too much of the upper straying from that well established Air Jordan palette. Michael Jordan played for two NBA teams. One of them almost ‘doesn’t count’. That’s because the MJ we came to know and fear made his mark with the Chicago Bulls, winning six titles and countless accolades while establishing the world’s most successful signature sneaker line. The two seasons Mike spent playing with the Washington Wizards didn’t even result in a postseason appearance thanks to MJ’s aging knees in the second season, but the result of that brief tenure in the Nation’s Capital is a series of dope blue and gold designs like the new Jordan Son of Mars pictured above. They’d get a ‘Nuggets’ tag, too, were Melo still with Denver, and either way you go, a grey-based Jay with blue hits is so wardrobe-friendly, these are shaping up to be a sleeper hit during the ‘Olympic’ Air Jordan summer. A fitting blend for a sneaker composed of elements from Air Jordans III-VI plus the XX strap, the Jordan Son of Mars has to this point been roughly split between classic colorways and new looks. One of these signature looks has even been through the process twice, as the earlier ‘Pop Art’ original was compared to this more obvious Air Jordan VII homage thanks to its colorful accents. But whereas the first pair was a considerable stretch to connect with the Sevens that first retroed last February after a nineteen year wait, this ‘Bordeaux’ Jordan Son of Mars really lives up to its name. That’s not to say they haven’t all been altered, though, as the Son of Mars adds a bit of mint green to its heel and outsole to connect the ‘Bordeaux’ palette with one of 2012′s trendy colors.
