JORDAN SON OF MARS The Jordan Son of Mars is a hybrid design from Jordan Brand in the same vein as the Jordan Spiz’ike. The name references Spike Lee’s “Mars Blackmon” character frequently featured in Air Jordan ad spots, with the sneaker itself grabbing design elements from all of the Air Jordan models Spike played a part in promoting: the Air Jordan III, IV, V, VI, and XX.

Jordan hybrid sneakers are always under the careful scrutiny of purists of the brand, but surprisingly, the verdict on the Son Of Mars was reached rather quickly upon its debut release in February. A similar release known as the Rare Air of 2010 was, for lack of a better word, a flop, which made the popularity of the Son Of Mars are ‘suprise’. With a nice crop of upcoming releases on the way, like the ‘Bred’, the ‘Bordeaux’, and the new ‘Grey/Gold/Blue’, the Son Of Mars is staying put, but Mache Customs proved, with his sick Air Yeezy Customs, that perhaps the right colorway was all the shoe needed.
Today, we get a look at another Son Of Mars custom inspired by the Air Yeezy – the unreleased sample colorway worn by Kanye during his 2009 performance at the Grammy Awards. Done by Brian ‘Wolfstein’ Villanueva, this Mars x Yeezy custom adopts a similar tonal black upper, but with grey hits on the midsole, a hint of red on the outsole, and a powerful glow-in-the-dark toe, illuminating a refreshing blue glow. We’ve got a detailed gallery of this great custom work just below, so if you want to get a jump on some of Wolfstein’s crazy custom projects, follow Brian Wolfstein Villanueva on Twitter to be on top of his projects and let us know what you think of the Son Of Mars Air Yeezy’ Grammy’ customs below!

The most recently previewed pair of Jordan Son of Mars apparently takes its golden-accented cool good looks from Michael’s brief tenure in the nation’s capital, but the color scheme in which His Airness’ cast his immense legacy isn’t about to be left out. Quite to the contrary, in fact, as the ‘Bred’ Son of Mars is the next out the gate in just under two weeks. This patent-mudguarded pair looks especially ‘Stealth’-y, and with a monster drop like the ‘South Beach’ LeBron 9 Elite also dropping next Saturday, June 2nd, how likely are these to fly under the radar? It’s hard to imagine a black and red colorup on a popular Jordan sitting on shelves too long, so take a moment to check these out below before you begin plotting on your cop. Photos: SneakerBox Clyde

Each of the Jordan Son of Mars colorways we’ve seen to this point have quickly come along with nicknames (however precise), and though the pair pictured above remains the sole exception to that rule, there are a couple of Jordan Brand story lines that could weave their threads into this palette. The mix of greys with soft blue and gold accents is the latest chapter in a tale begun when the ‘Cool Grey’ Air Jordan XI dropped in 2010. This immensely wearable palette is also easily connected to MJ’s days as a Washington Wizard or Carmelo Anthony’s first seven and a half years in Denver, or you could get really creative and see this as a visual bridge between Mike’s last season at UNC and his first Olympic gold medal at the 1984 LA Games. Any way you slice it, this is a versatile design that, paired with the Son of Mars’ early momentum, is shaping up to be one of the summer’s sleeper hits. We expect them at select JB retailers on August 11th and you can see some more angles after the jump below. via AR

So it appears that the Jordan Son Of Mars isn’t just a one-trick pony, because Jordan Brand’s got another great colorway on the way. We’ve yet to see the release of the heritage versions of ‘Bred’ and ‘Bordeaux’ hit stores, but this new Grey/Blue/Yellow colorway has come to light and definitely gives the rest of the Son Of Mars some competition as the best colorway. It features a combination of grey and blue similar to that of a cadet’s uniform, with a touch of University Blue on the interior lining, lace-lock, and Jumpman logo on the heel. A tentative release date is set for August 11th, but we’ll keep you in tune if that changes, so check out the gallery of images below and let us know what you think. Photos: marqueesole

As the quality and execution of sneaker customs have vastly improved, so has the construction of sneaker cakes! The Jordan Son Of Mars in the ‘Club Purple’ colorway is the shoe in focus here, and it’s easy to note that the Jordan Son Of Mars is one of the most detail-specific shoes we’ve ever seen; it’s inspired by five different Air Jordan models with some heady designs like elephant print (Air Jordan III), the lump on the ankle (Air Jordan VI), and the lasered graphic on the midfoot strap (Air Jordan XX). With that said, this cake, built by Made Fresh Daily Cakes, accomplishes everything laid out by the Son Of Mars, making this cake, without question, one of the most impressive we’ve seen. Check out the extra detailed shots below and let us know what you think!

If you’re among the Jordanheads who wanted JB to shift its attention from wild Air Jordan 1 colorways and Air Jordan Force Fusions to more Retros, it suffices to say that the last year-plus has left you happy, if holding an empty bank account. Interestingly enough, it’s within this context that Jordan Brand has released one of its most successful mashup designs in recent memory, and with a colorup as familiar and consistently popular as the ‘Bred’ look on this new Jordan Son of Mars, it’s poised to meet with the same positive reception as the two that’ve dropped so far. These touch down on June 2nd a full three months before the true ‘Bordeaux’ edition; stick with Sneaker News for all of what comes in between and check out some new images of the ‘Bred’ Son of Mars in the meantime. If we were to hand out ‘sneaker awards’ right now, the trophy for “Most Suprising Sneaker of the Year” is without a doubt the Jordan Son of Mars. Air Jordan hybrid sneakers haven’t always been widely embraced so the projections for the Jordan Son of Mars weren’t much different than what we experienced with past hybrid projects like the Jordan Rare Air and even some colorways of the Jordan Spiz’ike, but with the fanfare attached to the first ‘Pop Art’ colorway and the recently released ‘Club Purple’, we can only expect this classic Bulls get-up to be the most popular of the bunch. Tentatively scheduled for a June 2nd release, this new Jordan Son Of Mars colorway wraps up the OG Black/Red colorway while adding in some key-note details of the AJ Legacy; it’s the subtle hints of patent leather on the mudguard, specking on the ‘sharks teeth’, the iced-out ousole, and the two tones of elephant print that give this upcoming Jordan Son of Mars a handsome profile. We’ve got a detailed look at this upcoming release below so let us know what you think and we’ll keep you updated on when developments arrive. Photos: marqueesole

The ‘Bordeaux’ colorway of the Air Jordan VII made a triumphant return last year, and since then, we’ve seen a number of attempts at re-creations on other models – starting with the February release of the Jordan Spiz’ike. However, it was made evident that a more accurate attempt was made for the Jordan Son of Mars, which was spotted among DJ Khaled’s Air Jordan stash during a recent video recounting his latest music video shoot. These are tentatively scheduled to drop in the middle of September – the 15th to be exact – so keep that in mind as you gear up for an onslaught of Air Jordan releases in 2012!
