Just mentioning Hawaii typically conjures images of pristine beaches, hula girls and just an all-around good time, but the fiftieth state was originally annexed due in large part to its military strategic value.  One of the island state’s best known boutiques reminded us of that power with a tiger camo Chuck Taylor last year, and since it worked so well in olive, they’re back again for 2012 with a black-based edition.  This new Kicks/HI x Converse First String CT Hi features the store’s signature orange on the outsole of an otherwise monochromatic canvas build, and you can see more below before grabbing from their flagship, the Guam location or at St. Alfred in Chi-town this Saturday, November 10th .

Hawaii is known for its beautiful hula girls, volatile volcanoes and postcard beaches, but did you know about the 50th state’s famed cowboys?  Also known as paniolos, the Hawaiian cowboys trace their roots to the Mexican vaqueros just like the mainland American cattle rustlers, so are on the leading edge of a western-based trend that might replicate itself ‘Over and Over’ like the livestock brought over by General Vancouver?  We’ll hold off on proclaiming the era of the countrified hybrid, but it’s hard not to see the potential for similar themes once you’ve noticed how well the Kicks/HI x Vans Vault Authentic LX turned out.  The distinctive blend of premium leather and blue chambray already moved quickly from the store’s brick and mortar locations, and now a scant 24 pairs is available from the Kicks/HI online store.

Kicks/HI is one of the 50th state’s premier sneaker and streetwear boutiques, and in their latest collaboration with Vans, they’ve managed to blend a love of sneakers and fashion with that island vibe for which their projects have become well-known.  The Kicks/HI x Vans Vault Authentic LX ‘Paniolo’ takes its name and distinct styling from the attire worn by cowboys who immigrated from Mexico to the Polynesian islands in the 1800s.  The rugged vibe combining denim and grainy leather is balanced by both materials’ premium quality and you can see additional details below including the signature blaze orange insoles.  Expect Kicks’ Authentics  exclusively at their stores in Hawaii and Guam plus their brothers at Chicago’s St. Alfred on August 4th and click through for more images.  via HB

We talk alot about sneakers having some sort of ‘inspiration’ behind them, and more often than not, it’s some kind of pop culture reference that reflects the nostalgic attention to detail that unites sneakerheads.  But in the case of this new Vans Vault Chukka Boot and Era, we’re seeing a design that has its roots in one man’s quest for a life in harmony with the natural world.  Kicks/HI teamed up with fellow 50th stater Sig Zane to bring to live the ‘Makua to Makai’ Pack that takes us from ‘mountains to sea’ with a couple of Zane’s distinctive patterns that connect us with Hawaii’s unique and beautifully holistic culture.  Click through to see more of the kicks that’ll be available this Saturday, April 14th at Kicks in Hawaii and Guam as well as St. Alfred in Chicago, as well as a video of Sig Zane himself describing the project.

Celebrating its 10th Anniversary is one of the nation’s leader in sneaker purveyance – KICKS/HI located in Honolulu. Since 2001, KICKS/HI has been well recognized by major brands of all types, including Nike, Reebok, Stussy, and New Era, and this upcoming release of the KICKS/HI x Converse Chuck Taylor All Star is actually the third overall partnership between the two names. KICKS/HI co-founder Eddy Haus has stated that for this project, Kicks Hawaii has chosen to leave the Chuck Taylor silhouette intact (better to not mess with a classic, right?), but used its tiger shark mascot by featuring the appropriate camo print on the upper. These are set to drop this Saturday, October 22nd, at KICKS/HI in Honolulu and Guam, as well as St. Alfred in Chicago at a retail price of $70. Check out the additional images below and stick with Sneaker News for more Converse release info and updates.
