The name Matt Stevens should certainly ring a bell if you’re a loyalist of Nike’s original Air Max series. His Air Max 1 tributary book called the MAX100 Project displayed his personal favorite sneaker in one hundred different formats by his own interpretations. To celebrate to reinvention of Air Max and the debut of the new Engineered Mesh, Nike Sportswear teamed up with Matt to create #AIRMAX, which expands his already impressive Air Max 1 illustrations into the territory of the Air Max 90, 95, and 97, pinpointing the design inspiration, color, culture, and reinvention of each sneaker. Check out some of his artwork below and be sure to check on the #AIRMAX project on the Nike Sportswear Facebook Page.

MAX100 x Nike Air Max 1 – Rendered as Originally Intended

September 12th, 2012 by | 4 comments

max 100 x nike air max 1 rendered as originally intended MAX100 x Nike Air Max 1 Rendered as Originally Intended

The MAX100 Project was a collection of Air Max 1s envisioned in never-before-conceived concepts and ideas, so news of the MAX100 x Social Status partnership in which ten designs would be produced was an absolute dream come true for all parties involved. Given the confines of Nike iD, the final ten designs came out pretty well, but some of the discrepancies between the original Matt Stevens design and the final shoe were painfully evident. The Air Jordan III-inspired design, for example, didn’t have elephant print, and some of the designs might’ve been too difficult to pull off on Nike iD. One sneakerhead who had been following the progress of the MAX100 x Social Status release took it upon himself to render some more accurate versions, going tit for tat with Matt Stevens’ amazing artwork. Upon seeing these, we can’t help but wish that Nike had gone the extra mile with this project to make these a little more true to their original concepts. Check out some of the renderings done by Rogier Mulder below and let us know which is your favorite!

social status x max100 x nike air max 1 shoes revealed 1 Social Status x MAX 100 x Nike Air Max 1 Shoes Revealed

A little over two years ago, Sneaker News readers got their first look at themed Nike Air Max 1 schematics by graphic artist Matt Stevens. Matt’s Air Max 1-A-Days started as an online project, saw its first exhibition upon Schuh-You’s Afew reopening last summer and clinched a Kickstarter goal soon after that wound up with these delightful takes on the original Air Max runner bound in a hard cover. A short while after the MAX100 book hit came off the presses, we got our first glimpse at what might happen were Steven’s sketches to be made into actual AM1s.

Dusseldorf, Germany has been central to the expansion of this project, but it’s Stevens’ home town of Charlotte, North Carolina that sees its top-tier Nike Sportswear retailer step up to push the envelope even further. Social Status’ southern location will help to bring ten different designs to realization, the first five of which you’ll see in greater detail after the jump below. Proceeds from the auctions on these limited editions will benefit Charlotte-area charities, and Sneaker News will bring you the second half along with more details on availability shortly.

After re-opening its store after a brief renovations (the glow-in-the-dark floor being just one of the sick structural elements of the venue), Afew (formerly Schuh-You) has held a few sick events at its retail spot, like the Vintage Gallery Event (hands down one of the best sneaker exhibits of the entire year) and more recently, the MAX100 Launch Party. Matt Stevens’ MAX100 book has created positive waves across the sneaker community, particularly with Air Max 1 fans (like, everyone in Europe!); Afew opened its doors for a special pop-up exhibit showcasing some of Stevens’ best works from the book while offering some food, drinks, and live DJ’ed tunes. Check out a quick re-cap of the Afew x MAX100 Launch Exhibit below and don’t forget to cop one of the limited edition MAX100 books here. via EuKicks.

nike air max 100 book available summary MAX100 Book by Matt Stevens Available

If you could make a different Nike Air Max 1 every day for a hundred in a row, what would you come up with?  That’s something you could accomplish courtesy of NIKEiD’s online customization experience, but what if you could go even further than the available options and create something wholly and utterly unique?  That’s exactly what ’Air Max 1-a-Days’ creator Matt Stevens has done with the aid of some friendly funding on Firestarter, his new MAX100 book a nicely bound compilation of the various Eighty-Seven mockups he’d crafted when the series was running new looks on the daily back during summer.  Check out a preview of the final book including some new designs and let us know if you plan to buy a copy.
