New Balance’s earlier low profile runners don’t get as much play these days as the 1980s lineup, but this model in particular made an impact in 2013 by way of the Herschel Supply Co. collab. Here we see another kind of perfected construction at the heart of a New Balance 420 design, as stunning supermodel Heidi Klum adds her personal touch to a HKNB Unisex 420 (sizes listed are mens, women go down 1.5). These Heidi Klum 420s have a bit of sparkle applied to their lightweight suede and canvas uppers, and you can see more below before buying straight from New Balance.

The project from Herschel Supply Co and New Balance has at last made its way to retailers, and all six sneakers that constitute the group are now up for grabs. Included are three colorways each of the New Balance 420 and the New Balance H710, with the common threads between them being the Herschel branding, the paisley innards, and the little leather details. The Herschel Supply Co. x New Balance capsule is one that the general public still has to wait a little bit for, as the six sneaker set won’t hit retail till February 2nd. A select few have laid their eyes on the sneakers though, as just last night the two teams held a private event celebrating the New Balance H710 and the New Balance 420 included in the the pack. Raekwon of Wu-Tang fame was also in building-the appearance marking his second stop at a New Balance event in the last half year. An upcoming collaboration with Herschel Supply Co. will give some extra shine to three new pairs, but there’s already one fresh New Balance 420 arriving on store shelves for January 2013. Runner’s World’s pick for 1982′s best shoe, the NB420 is a low profile distance runner set in the suede and nylon composition common to its day. It’s all black except for the grey heel, adding white branding fields plus select red and blue hits (presumably additions to a very similar black/white/grey model previewed in December) for a high-contrast look you’ll find available now at Overkill.

Kings of the modern-day ‘vintage’ backpack, Vancouver’s Herschel Supply Co. reveal more from their upcoming collaboration with New Balance. More colorways and one more model makes for six total Herschel x New Balance designs, split evenly between the H710 hiker we saw in red on Friday, and the low-profile 420 runner. Paisley sockliners and ornate tongue tags suggest the same eye for detail that makes Herschel’s bags so great, while leather side panel ‘N’ branding connects with the brand’s work in a less overt way than the crowd-pleasing ‘Backpack’ 574s. The New Balance classic lineup is operating at the peak of its powers with a huge selection of different models and colorways to satisfy the fans of these old school styles. This month brings along four pairs spread across three models that, around this time last year, weren’t playing as big a role in the NB catalog. Increased variety as demonstrated on two New Balalance 420s in tonal suede/nylon blends as well as the ‘Denim Blue’ takes on the 998 and 1300 mean that sneakerheads who gravitate toward that vintage style will be thrilled the next time they arrive at a NB retailer like Kith in New York.

While the world’s major athletic brands gear up for participation in the 2012 Olympic Games, New Balance knows the ‘Road to London’ is paved by the M1 and M6 motorways you’d take from Flimby to the British capital. The New England running specialists who maintain a top-notch UK factory presence have honored the XXX Olympiad with a bunch of kicks carrying this collection name, but the 574s and 576s we’d seen to this point took a more indirect route to expressing their inspiration. With the New Balance 574 ‘Road to London’ and its new 420 comrades, this sextet lets each of the Union Jack’s colors take center stage for one design while the other two play supporting roles along with a little gold for the five rings flair. The end result is kind of like NB’s classics catalog as a whole: a lot of similarities, with a focus on subtle details and premium quality.
