Just sliding in to make the January release date we projected alongside an early December second look, the first of five ‘Windbreaker Pack’ New Balance 574s has splashed down at retail. Despite what might at first glance appear to have been a delay, this is great news for fans of the most prolific NB silhouette, as this quintet had initially been slated as a second quarter drop. The grey nylon edition featuring bold blue and orange accents has enough energy to keep some pep in your step even if it’s one of those dreary days, and you can see more images below before grabbing at New Bal retailers like Politics.

The classic New Balance 574 is getting a little bit of an upgrade in 2013 in the form of the more modern Revlite kit on bottom. While the silhouette was certainly born as a runner, it’s kind of been out of that territory for a while now thanks to the advent of New Balance’s rapidly evolving running technology. This upgrade tugs it back towards that category, giving the sneaker a more lightweight and a better kit for cushioning. It’s been a while since we last heard from the ‘Year of the Snake’ quartet of New Balance 574s. And since Chinese New Year technically hasn’t arrived quite yet (that’s February 10th) we can definitely forgive the long wait. Three pairs from the pack pick up the scaly blocking in the same manner, with the fourth sort of black and gold combo going nearly all over with a printed pattern that loses just a little bit of the texture from the rest of the group. It seems like more New Balance previews are surfacing with each passing day in 2013, and today’s helping is a smorgasbord on display at Bread and Butter Berlin. We see both previously spotlighted models and brand new revelations in this selection, so let’s start with the ones we know by name. Both of the raincoat-inspired New Balance 577 ‘Rain Mac’ colorways are joined by three prototypically subdued brethren, and from there it’s all new stuff. There are several 576s on tap including a trio with tongue tags denoting their tea-infused theme, a bold ‘raging bull’ of a 998, a couple of 1300s, four 1500s and a burgundy reprisal of the 990 OG. Oh yes, the New Balance 574 can play the collab role just as well as its bigger number brethren. Arriving right before the year expires will be this special edition of the sneaker, a design whipped up by the likes of Oshman’s and mita sneakers. The clean suede pair aims for a mojito look, with the minty blue/green combo even getting a mini mint leaf added on to the front end (there’s a few more little additions included such as the cork sole and rope laces). Dapper Dan is every bit a legend in the world of hip-hop fashion-the Harlem resident serving as a tailor to a handful of golden era rapper luminaries and street figures. His MO was appropriating the luxury likes of Gucci, Chanel, and more to his own ends, with his shop in NYC serving up custom made pieces fashioned fabrics of those high-end providers. He hit on a few sneakers back in the day too, and by the looks of this recent Sneaker Freaker piece the New Balance 574 was one of them.
