Did you know the New Balance 574 has a birthday coming up? The sort-of baseline retro running style from NB will be turning 25 in 2013, but the pair you’re looking at here was actually created in celebration of an even earlier birthday. That would be the 10th birthday of premier Philly sneaker spot UBIQ, who crafted up this pair with full grain leather and a clean black and orange colorway. The pair comes in sort of the same vein as Kith’s store-opening New Balance 574 package from last year, using available New Balance customization options and keeping things pretty toned down as far as branding. There’s no such thing as a sneaker being “too good”, so with that option off the table, you’d have to conclude the New Balance 574 is “just right”. That’s a casual way of saying this timeless classic was brilliant from the jump, an impeccable design that continues to age with all the grace of a fine wine. The complexity of a new 574 is all about its blocking, so while we’ve come to expect the majority of pairs in suede and mesh, how their colors are distributed makes all the difference in the world. This latest trio, for example, looks like three different pairs with the same blocking pattern, and while that’s mostly true, a keen eye can point out at least one difference unique to each style. The 574 is likely New Balance’s most popular silhouette, but it hasn’t always had the same panache explicitly for women. The New Balance 574 appears to be picking up some steam with the ladies releases of late, following up the special jewel-y ‘Backpack’ colorways with two of the most energetic New Bals all year. These fresh 574s rock the standard suede/mesh configuration, but things diverge quickly from there, with even the charcoal grey edition adding four different tropical accents plus a fairly intricately woven lace. It’s a bold prediction even with New Balance and brands of its ilk rising through the sneakerhead power rankings thanks to some superb collaborative efforts, but might NB’s venerable 574 be 2013′s answer to the incredible Air Force 1 30th anniversary year? The mighty New Balance 574 celebrates its 25th birthday when the calendar flips, and they’re ready with four ‘Year of the Snake’ colorups to outmatch the AF1 YOTD drops. The first goes hard with its inspiration, adding a multicolor gradient to the snake texture overlay for the most dynamic look in a pack that also contains relatively simpler red/white, green/white and black/white styles. Next year marks the 25th anniversary for the New Balance 574, a classic in every sense of the word that’s been a pillar of NB’s lifestyle strategy for over half its life. This brand known for its understated appeal and premium suede and mesh is more likely to celebrate its factory workers than its own longevity, though one might argue that strong efforts like this navy and soft blue mix are a kind of ‘thank you’ to New Bal fans. There’s no doubt that the ‘Backpack Collection’ has been the most attention grabbing as far as New Balance 574 releases go in 2012, with the nylon/leather combo pop up at a good number of retailers and sort of dominating the 574 wears at a street level for the time being. Next up is this New Balance 574, again donning a little more leather than usual but lacking the full on nylon treatment to fit in with its backpack brethren, instead letting suede dominate up top and pushing said material to toebox and tongue.
