New Balance 990 USA – Black

New Balance’s numbering system was designed to provide an instant reference to a shoe’s relative capabilities, but here’s a case where the straightforward system gets a bit confusing.  NB teased a 30th anniversary edition of their classic 990 back at the start of the summer, but even earlier, we’d seen the above pictured silhouette carrying that same number.  The ‘new’ New Balance 990 is closer to the 991, but features big ‘N’ styling blended into the techier upper design.  Black 990 Version 3s come from the Vintage Collection with that distinctive heel script, and you can see how they compare to earlier releases in more photos below.  Available on Bridge Footwear.

The New Balance 990 is back folks. Wait a minute, didn’t they just debut a couple months ago? Stick with us for a second here: New Balance did indeed release a new model bearing the 990 designation this year, but confusingly enough kept its moniker the same as the shoe to originally claim that number two decades back. New Balance are known for their no-frills approach to running performance, so when it came time to resurrect a classic for its 30th anniversary, they chose to err on the side of caution.  Perhaps it’s all that ’2012′ hoopla that has NB waiting until it’s been a full three decades before the New Balance 990 returns in its original form, but in any case, this bringback is one that’s long overdue.  We’ve seen the 991, (Custom US) 993 996, 998 and 999 all return, and now the shoe that started this distance running series back in 1982 gets its due with an OG grey suede and mesh look that’ll have ‘Made in USA’ fans clamoring to complete their collections.  Check out more after the jump, let us know where this classic silhouette compares to standbys like the 574 or the other 99-s and stick with Sneaker News for release info.  via FNG

Nike Sportswear is commemorating the Air Force 1′s 30th anniversary in grand style, but there’s got to be another brand out there with at least one three-decades-old sneaker to celebrate.  In the case of New Balance, it’s one that’s far from their regular rotation, though as soon as you see the style, it will instantly connect to the other similarly numbered models.  That’s because 1982′s New Balance 990 was the inspiration for 991, 992 and 993, the first of those more recognizable numbers gaining notoriety in the past year-plus as late Apple founder Steve Jobs’ sneakers of choice.  The 990 goes back even further, but has been updated to reflect the fine American craftsmanship that goes into each pair.  These 0.5oz lighter 990s will be available in a wider range of colors coming up soon, with the classic grey coming out the gates first.  via HC
