The New Balance classic lineup is operating at the peak of its powers with a huge selection of different models and colorways to satisfy the fans of these old school styles. This month brings along four pairs spread across three models that, around this time last year, weren’t playing as big a role in the NB catalog. Increased variety as demonstrated on two New Balalance 420s in tonal suede/nylon blends as well as the ‘Denim Blue’ takes on the 998 and 1300 mean that sneakerheads who gravitate toward that vintage style will be thrilled the next time they arrive at a NB retailer like Kith in New York.

They’re separated by a single number, but especially in this duo where their colorways are also quite different, we get a sense for how big of a departure the New Balance 999 was from the 998. Both feature Abzorb cushioning and are supremely well suited to suede and mesh old school builds like these, but the 998′s angular design seems like it came from an earlier generation, especially with the 999′s similarities to the ever popular MT580 helping that shape to feel fresh yet familiar. Check out the ‘Denim Blue’ 998s and the grey and teal ML999GT after the jump, and if you still need to find a pair, check with West NYC.

It’s not as widely known and loved as models like the 574 and 576 or even recent standouts like the 999, but maybe that’s because we just don’t see all that many New Balance 998 releases. This new pair of M998BDs comes in all suede and mesh like the original, its ‘Denim Blue’ nickname in the context of a relatively obscure silo one reminder that denim on kicks was even rarer just a decade ago. Perhaps we can take that as an indication of further expansion and even more new 998s from NB in the near future, so stay tuned to Sneaker News for updates and click through for additional images of this ‘Denim Blue’ M999BD just issued by New Balance.

What better way to lace up during the holiday season than in some red and green kicks right? New Balance seems to think so, devoting at least a portion of their Holiday 2012 collection to covering that classic color combo. First up is the New Balance 998 in forest green, a sneaker that’s had a solid run over the past half year thanks to the Made in USA models hitting us. The red is brought up by the New Balance 1600, doing so with a rich suede that should have all eyes on this underrated model. Click through for the full look at both upcoming New Balance colorways to hold you over until they hit later this year. Photos: Ronnie Fieg

New Balance has been increasingly generous with their classic lineup in recent months and it looks like we can expect that trend to continue courtesy of a few new ‘Made in USA’ drops slated for later this year. The New Balance 996 will return after having been resurrected by UNDFTD and Stussy last fall, and will be joined at retailers in late 2012 by 998s and 1300s also crafted at NB’s New England factories. Each of these pairs features a traditional mix of suede and mesh in muted tones for the kind of timeless appeal that draws sneakerheads toward their heritage catalog. Check them out up-close after the jump and stick with Sneaker News for word on US availability. via HS

The fallout of last year’s CNCPTS x New Balance 999 ’Kennedy’ hit release has seen a warm reception for this classic along with wider availability of new colorways here in the US, exactly the kind of momentum we’re hoping to see from the model that’s just one number different. But the New Balance 998 has a significantly differnent silhouette than the NB999, so having both of them arrive in new editions offers a great opportunity to get schooled on these (almost) forgotten classics. The 999s come in a tonal grey getup with purple accents, while the 998s opt for an earthy brown mix of suede and mesh. Photos after the jump will make you more familiar with these relatively rare ‘Made in USA’ designs, then you can grab one or both of them from West.

Sneaker News showed you a glimpse at an upcoming New Balance M1300 earlier this month crafted in tonal navy suede and mesh. They bear a new ‘NB Classic’ tag just like a couple other of the upcoming releases on the same tongue that also denotes their point of origin, and that’s something shared in common by a few other soon-to-shelves retro runners. Also along for the ride in simple yet satisfying colorways is a brown NB998 and two pairs of the 991 model perhaps now most famous for being the favorite sneaker of late Apple head Steve Jobs. Each one is impeccable in its simplicity and they’ll all be available within the first quarter of 2012. via FNG

As New Balance continues to expand its footwear offerings, we’re seeing several new hybrid designs, but you can’t go wrong with the originals. The New Balance M998BR isn’t one of the models we’ve seen ruggedized for trail use, but then again, it’s sufficiently rare that just the good ol’ 998 itself is going to cause stirs among the NB faithful. This ‘Made in USA’ edition showed up during the summer tradeshow circuit as a release expected for the first half of next year, but it looks like you won’t have to wait until 2012 to get these because NB’s fellow New Englanders Concepts in Cambridge, Mass. have just gotten a full-size run in stock.
