Sure Ronnie Fieg may be better known for his work with another classic running brand, but keep in mind his output hasn’t been purely tiger stripes up to this point. He got together with New Balance once before for the KITH grand opening, and this time around he’s taking a higher end model for a spin with the New Balance 999. Do the results have the potential match the high bar set by the Concepts x New Balance 999 ‘Kennedy’? The fallout of last year’s CNCPTS x New Balance 999 ’Kennedy’ hit release has seen a warm reception for this classic along with wider availability of new colorways here in the US, exactly the kind of momentum we’re hoping to see from the model that’s just one number different. But the New Balance 998 has a significantly differnent silhouette than the NB999, so having both of them arrive in new editions offers a great opportunity to get schooled on these (almost) forgotten classics. The 999s come in a tonal grey getup with purple accents, while the 998s opt for an earthy brown mix of suede and mesh. Sneaker companies are always looking for a clever way to inject their oeuvre into the general public, whether it be through inspirational talks by your favorite basketball player or a little support from some select tastemakers. The upcoming New Balance range unfolds here as part of a team up with Australian band Gold Fields, with an extra partner in the form of 13th Witness behind the lens. The Gold Fields blokes rocked a range of NB models during the shoot for the pending ‘Holy No’ music video that show off a bit of a heritage feel, the likes of which we’ve been keeping you up to date with here on Sneaker News. The New Balance 999 came back in a huge way in 2011 thanks to the super-successful ‘Kennedy’ collaboration with Boston’s Concepts, and it’s been slowly but surely working its way into the NB Classic rotation for the past couple seasons since. The latest NB999 comes in a colorway you might associate with a city near the opposite coast, as the purple and black accents most certainly provide a certain ‘King’-ly feel to this grey suede and mesh design. They’re sure to be a hit in and around Sac-Town, but one look at how well they pair with brown pants should make these a go-to design for an entire set of sneakerheads across the country this winter. 2011 has been an absolutely huge year for Air Jordan Retros. This comes after a couple years of AJFs and other hybrids being met with pleas (especially here in the Sneaker News comments) for your classic favorites, and the same seems to have taken place on a smaller scale with New Balance. NB heads often see their favorite models released in collaborations and other special edition overseas-exclusive drops, so the return of the New Balance 999 into regular rotation on US store shelves has been welcomed. It started with Concepts’ ‘Kennedy’ design and we’ve seen the simple OG colorblocking pattern repeated on black, grey and navy suede designs, so the timing is right for a brand new release that’ll probably show up quite a bit at Heinz Field on Sundays this fall now that the NFL labor dispute has been resolved. New Balance continues to excavate their vaults in search of new old favorites, the latest to join the fray for Fall 2011 a late-’90s runner that has all the character of their other classics from that decade. The New Balance 999 has been reserved for special collaborative releases in recent years, models like the mita sneakers x Leftfoot ‘Feral Collection’ and Concepts’ recent ‘The Kennedy’ coming to mind as among the best from their respective years of release. But this fall, expect all the OG colorways back with that unbeatable combination of suede and mesh, grey and black pairs set to hit retailers. April was a huge month for the rarely seen New Balance 999, its Concepts-designed ‘Kennedy’ collabo among the year’s very best and two more classic colorways following suit just a couple weeks later. But the NB almost-a-thousand has been absent since then, so we’re excited to see this new edition readying for retailers next month. The New Balance ML999 will hit store shelves in July wearing a deep navy blue suede plus white and grey accents for a colorway that’s as versatile as you can get (just combine with black garments carefully/sparingly).
