NIKE AIR CLASSIC BW The Nike Air Classic BW is a running sneaker in Nike’s Air Max family of design, making its debut in 1991 under the original moniker the Nike Air Max IV. The model was renamed for its retro release as the Nike Air Classic BW (Big Window). The most popular colorway for the Nike Air Classic BW is the ‘Persian Violet’.

Aside from the recent Air Trainer 1 ‘Chlorophyll’ homage, each of the Nike Air Classic BWs released in the past two months have come with a different take on the same colorblocking template. This latest pair doesn’t need to worry about where it puts what, because with just black and Cool Grey on these new Big Windows, the placement is more or less defined by the former Air Max IV’s distinct lines. There were two discrete bursts each producing a cluster of new Nike Air Classic BW releases earlier this year, but it’s been about six weeks since the last of those came to market. This latest pair just sneaks its way into the spring season window, its design one whose basic recipe we’d seen in action on the Anthracite and University Red February drop. These don’t at first seem all that similar thanks to a black and grey combo rather than multiple tones of the latter as utilized on the earlier edition, but a thorough examination of the blocking pattern reveals a 100% match. This begs the question: which one turned out better? If the above is your answer, look for them now at select Nike Sportswear retailers like Titolo.

Has anyone else noticed the rapid increase in the number of releases for the Nike Air Classic BW in recent months? A silhouette that is too often left out of the conversation when it comes to big bubble classics, this sneaker is quietly coming with some nice looks for 2012. The latest shown here is blocked much like the recently revealed deep royal version, albeit with an overall lighter feel on top and the obvious inclusion of university red as the accenting color. The ‘Chlorophyll’ colorway of the original Nike Air Trainer 1 is one that is almost always welcomed by sneakerheads when ported onto other models. This time around we see it make the jump to the Nike Air Classic BW, with the green hits remaining pretty minimal showing up on the Air Max detailing on the heel and outsole. Heck even without the rich background of the colorway, this pair could stand on its own as a pretty versatile model thanks to the grey’d out upper. Grey tones have been working so well on their own these past few years, why don’t we try infusing a couple into one of the established classics, both in name in stature? These aren’t exactly the beloved Persian Violets that stand out as the Nike Air Classic BW‘s signature colorway, but they do take the same basic colors and pattern, and apply a couple greys through the Big Window’s sweeping elliptical arc. We haven’t yet seen Nike Sportswear create a BW/Air Max 95 mashup, so this is about as close as you’ll get to combining those two icons’ best-known looks; are you glad to see this change or would you be down for another round of Persians? It’s not going to outnumber Air Max 1 or 95 releases, and most pairs can’t hold a candle to the limited releases we see when Nike Sportswear digs another forgotten classic out of their extensive running archives, but the Nike Air Classic BW performs admirably in its role as a fairly regular release rounding out the NSW classic lineup. The newest colorway for spring captures the anticipation of a verdant new world peeking out from under the winter snow, a white leather build that adds Court Green accents and a black Swoosh for a Beantown homer look that even Laker fans would have to admit came together quite nicely. It’s not seeing as many new releases these days as during the peak of its popularity a few years back, but if the Nike Air Classic BW wanted to show up in a bunch of new colorways as good as this one, we certainly wouldn’t mind. These new Big Windows highlight the upper’s distinctive lines with the high-contrast black/Volt combo anchored by a white Swoosh and heel stripe. The difference between the nylon tongue and collar, sockliner, top eylets, upper outline and signature Window gives these quite a bit more tonal depth than your average design with ‘just’ Volt accents, and you can see more of how it all fits together courtesy of some additional images after the jump. The most recent Nike Air Classic BW we showed you here on Sneaker News was an intriguing departure from the model’s characteristic colorways, a tonal mahogany mix of leather and suede whose white accents and gum sole made for one of the most interesting Big Windows in years.
