The Nike Air Flight ’89 has come back strong in its 23rd anniversary year, this second grey-uppered release of 2012 reflecting both how popular that neutral shade is and how versatile this classic silhouette really can be. We got a considerably more energetic look out of grey nubuck when Neptune Blue and Action Green accented the Stealth edition, so especially by comparison, this new Cool Grey, Anthracite and white mix comes off as its primary color would suggest. This is another one of those highly wearable models you can make one of your spring/summer go-to looks and they’re available now at Finish Line.

Much has been made of the Air Jordan IV’s 25th anniversary and the pending retros, but the sneaker with which it shares the most in common has vastly outnumbered the Four in early 2012. So while all the attention given to February’s ‘White Cement’ AJ4 Retro was well deserved, this new Nike Air Flight 89 makes five already for the young year. 1 on 5 isn’t exactly an ideal basketball matchup (even Michael Jordan himself needed guys like Jud Buechler to have his back), but this new Sacramento Kings-leaning Air Flight 89 has those odds seeming just about perfect (until the Military Blue IVs touch down, anyway). Check them out in greater detail after the jump and stick with Sneaker News for more info on this House of Hoops release. Photos: LTD

After a few years resting in the Nike Sportswear vaults, the Nike Air Flight 89 returned in early 2012 to take advantage of its 23rd anniversary. It might not be getting the kind of attention that contemporary design the Air Jordan IV has this spring, but the Air Flight 89s already beat the Fours to the punch in releasing their ‘True Blue’ colorway. Next up is a duo that separates out that pair’s two accent shades so that we get one white leather pair with Soar accents and Cool Grey eyelets, another in Varsity Red with Wolf Grey. Check out both of them up close after the jump and grab yours now at NSW retailers like Premier.

The Nike Air Flight 89 returned to action this spring after a few years on the bench, arriving in four new releases that saw the majority reflect classic styling and just one new look echoing one of today’s hot colorways. This new pair goes in a different direction that manages to blend both of these styles together while reminding us that the Sky Force 88 got a similarly all-over-colorful lifestyle-oriented run in the second half of last year. Could Nike Sportswear have a similar collection of Air Flight 89s on deck with different colors of microperforated suede aside from these Club Purple House of Hoops-exclusives? Stick with Sneaker News to find out, and in the meantime, check out a bunch more images and grab a pair early from kandlcorp on eBay.

While everybody’s busy talking about the recent Air Jordan IV Retro ‘White Cement’ hidden message, a model with which it has much in common has snuck up on us in the kind of colorway we rarely see on Air Jordans. The Nike Air Flight 89 will always be linked with the AJ4 thanks to that distinctive midsole tooling and a couple of eyelet wings borrowed from you-know-who’s sickest statistical year ever. But one thing Michael Jordan hasn’t done this summer is apply bright blue and green accents to a grey/white base, something Nike Sportswear has done to great effect in 2012. Let us know how these compare to similar colorways on models like the Air Max NM and Air Trainer Classic, then pick yours up from an NSW shop like Millennium Shoes.

Was it not for a significant turn of events, the Air Jordan line would have paved a completely different road. Michael was poised to be the primary representative for Nike Basketball’s new ‘Flight’ division, balancing out the rugged ‘Force’ that was (no pun intended) a force since ’82. Instead, the Air Jordan legacy continued on a greater path, but Michael still wore the Air Flight ’89, making the shoe one of the greatest cult-hits today. We first showed you a preview of numerous Flight ’89 colorways for 2012 then followed that up with a look at a sample pair of the ‘True Blue’, but much to the satisfaction of flight ’89 fans, worldwide this well-executed colorway is now available at in-store at select retailers like Oneness.

When we mention sneakers who borrowed their midsole tooling from legendary Air Jordan silhouettes, the Nike Air Yeezy is probably the first to come to mind. And while Kanye’s first collaboration with the Swoosh was so successful that we’re awaiting the sequel, even a superstar record producer can’t move as many units as this throwback to the golden age of both hip-hop and sneaker design. The Nike Air Flight ’89 is back in 2012 after a little while on the shelf, this new black and grey getup the kind of simple yet effective colorway that’s truly timeless and could have just as easily been an OG as a fresh new look for spring. They come on the heels of a bred pair, which leaves the ‘True Blue’ edition and a brand new neon-accented grey pair for later this season, so with all these classically-influenced colorups, will you pick this one up today from NikeStore?

The Nike Air Flight ’89 played a prominent role in Nike Sport Culture’s mid/late-’00s strategy, its classic basketball lines taking on colorways and design elements from other legendary releases as a foreshadow of things to come after the Sportswear division was formed in 2008. But interestingly enough, even as a trend it helped to pioneer is going stronger than ever, NSW has left the Air Flight ’89 off release schedules for pretty much its entire existence. But in honor of its 23rd birthday (the Flight ’89s do look a lot like the Air Jordan IV that also turns 23 next year), we’ll be seeing some new drops, kicking off with this Chicago Bulls-styled black nubuck edition with white and Sport Red accents. Check them out in greater detail after the jump and look for these at select NSW retailers like Long Island’s Sneaker Boutique or grab yours now on eBay.
