NIKE AIR FOAMPOSITE ONE The Nike Air Foamposite One debuted in 1997 as one of Penny Hardaway's signature shoes. It was one of the most expensive basketball sneakers of the era and over the last few years, it has developed into a cult classic. The Air Foamposite One is composed of a seamless liquid Foam mold, a Zoom Air unit, and a carbon-fiber midfoot plate. Foamposite fans would love for Nike to head to outer space with the shoes once again, but with no immediate plans for a Galaxy Part 2 to go down, we’ll have to settle for other creative customizers to meet the demand. Rocket Boy Nift’s Nike Air Foamposite One “E.T. Foam Home” hits close to home, as he uses the memorable sunset in the forest landscape from Steven Spielberg’s E.T. film on the upper of the shoe and adds a glow-in-the-dark outsole in the process. We tend to take extra notice anytime a Nike Air Penny sneaker comes back in “Orlando” colorways, but most of what’s been releasing with the Penny label has been out of the Magic bounds with concepts like “Phoenix Suns” or even the “Cyber” releases of the Air Penny II last year. Sole Swap comes through with a true OG Orlando inspiration - the “Atlantic Blue” colorway of the Nike Air Penny II. Using the Nike Air Foamposite One “Whiteout” as base, Sole Swap adds Atlantic blue to the outsole and lace collar, with reflective hits on the collar to mimic the 3M piping on the Air Penny II. The Nike Air Foamposite One “Fighter Jet” is a sneaker that actually has a bit of a thematic connection to the light up look. You can think of the LED treatment embedded in the icy outsole as an extension of the cockpit lights you might see in such a vehicle. The forecast on tax day is cloudy for many, no matter how sunny the skies. This turned out to be a good thing for Foamposite fanatics and Kevin Durant fans, as yesterday brought us a first glimpse at a crazy new One with meteorological detailing. This ‘Weatherman’ Nike Air Foamposite One applies the Doppler radar look that made the Zoom KD IV of the same name so spectacular. Reactions to this pair’s first viewing appeared fairly polarized considering the popularity of the Weatherman KD 4s; further proof of just how important this iconic silhouette remains within the sneakerhead community and how much people adore the classic unibodied Foams. Furthering proving that the graphic style of the Nike Air Foamposite One “Galaxy” was just the tip of the iceberg is this-the Nike Air Foamposite One “Weatherman”. The sneaker has a sort of Doppler radar print across the upper, perhaps suggesting that there’s a theme attached echoing the prized Nike Zoom KD IV “Weatherman” release (One that would make sense given the Kevin Durant/DMV Foamposite connection). Whether or not there’s a connection there remains a mystery at this time, but you can see that graphic prints are becoming more common with the Foamposite. For the fourth year in a row, the Sneaker News staff went on a weeks-long search for the greatest sneakers in specific categories, reaching out to our loyal readers with a tournament-style feature with the goal of whittling down thirty-two candidates to one sole winner. With Foamposites being such a hot item over the last few years, the category for the 2013 Tournament seemed like a given, and with thirty-two great Foamposite releases to choose from, it truly seemed like it was anyone’s game. Although there were a few tight races and surprising upsets on the way, four #1 seeds reached the Final Four, and the Championship battle was a face-off between the two undoubted polar opposites of the Foamposite spectrum – the original “Royal” and the game-changing “Galaxy”. We’ve come to a final conclusion for the tournament here, and we can say with confidence that result is one we can roll with! In 2010, the Sneaker News staff brought the sneaker category to March Madness, starting with an all-out slugfest between Air Jordans, Nike Basketball, Air Force 1s, and SB Dunks – with the Air Jordan XI coming out on top as the best sneaker of all-time. Since then, we’ve continued the Madness with two straight Air Jordan categories, so a felt a change was due. Choosing Foamposites for this year’s tournament seemed like the perfect call, andwith Foams evolving from a regional hit to a nationwide phenomenon, it was time for our loyal readers and Foamposite fanatics to crown the best ever. Thirty-two Foam candidates have been narrowed down to two, and we can say with confidence that no other releases since the original year in 1997 deserve to be in the Championship Round than the two featured here.
