The subject of Islam has always been a hot-button debate, even in the NBA. One of the league’s most polarizing individuals in history is none other than Chris Jackson, who later converted to Islam during his NBA career and took on the religious name Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf. His refusal to stand during a the traditional singing of the National Anthem before a game and shaky remarks regarding the American Flag prompted a swirl of controversy around his name, when he rather should be remembered as one of the greatest Free-Throw shooters in NBA history. Layupshot pays homage to this point-guard legend with this awesome Nuggets-inspired design, opting for ‘Chris Jackson’ with the initials on the heel as a way to pay respects to the same man. A detailed gallery is just below so take a look and let us know what you remember from Jackson/Abdul-Rauf’s career!

Let’s continue this series of NBA-inspired Nike Air Force 1 Bespoke designs by Layupshot with a focus on Chris Mullin, the St. John’s University standout that made his name as one of Golden State’s most prolific scorers. After his playing career was over, he was added to the Golden State front office, enduring a five-year tenure as the team’s VP of Basketball Operations until 2009. He’s currently sporting the same buzzcut as an analyst for NBA on ESPN, all while being inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and having his #17 jersey retired by Golden State. Mullin certainly deserves to be in the conversation of NBA greats, so enjoy this Bespoke tribute to Mullin just below!

nike air force 1 bespoke john stockton Nike Air Force 1 Bespoke John Stockton by Layupshot

When one thinks of the legacy left behind by John Stockton, what images pop up? Is it luxurious python-skin leather in a lush teal, or perhaps an earthy brown suede seen on worker boots? Not really, but this Bespoke design inspired by John Stockton brings an unprecedented level of luxury to the otherwise ‘vanilla’ aura of John Stockton, whose greatness came from unflashy yet effective fundamentals at the point-guard position. This Bespoke by Layupshot combines the aforementioned python-skin and suede with purple perforated leather and white canvas for that Utah Jazz feel (from the rocky mountain jerseys, not the purple/yellow joints), with Stockton’s ’12′ embroidered at the forefoot and his 10 All-Star Game selections noted on the tongue. A gallery of this unique take on John Stockton is right below so give it a look and let us know where these rank among all the other NBA-inspired designs we’ve seen.

Japan’s Edo period was marked by an isolationist foreign policy, a fact that gives you a sense of just how far ‘collaboration’ has come in a relatively short section of human history.  Japanese artists created distinctive styles during that period, including Ito Jakuchu, a Buddhist-inspired 18th century painter known for natural depictions and especially his birds.  In conjunction with Airside Nippon for Tokyo Designers Week 2012, Nike Harajuku in Tokyo is offering some spectacular Jakuchu-inspired chrysanthemum-print floral Nike Air Force 1 Bespokes  for one week only starting today, so have a closer look below and let us know how they compare to the impressive ‘Linen x Sakura’ Bespokes we just saw last week.

A world without Charles Barkley would be a world far less entertaining than it already is. His opinions never fail to coerce discussion, and it’s that type of polarizing personality that will ensure Barkley a permanent spot behind a studio camera! Let’s not forget, however, that Barkley is indeed one of the greatest players in NBA history, beginning his career with the Philadelphia 76ers; this latest Air Force 1 Bespoke in Layupshot‘s unofficial NBA Superstar series pays homage to Barkley in the red/white/blue, built with suede, patent leather, and smooth leather materials. A gallery of the Barkley-spoke is just below, so take a look and let us know what you think.

We’ve mentioned time and time again that $800+ in materials and colors for the Nike Air Force 1 Bespoke won’t always result in a prized package. In fact, we’ve seen more “misses” than “hits” simply due to the overcomplicated and mismanaged compositions, but can you really blame anyone for wanting to get the best bang for buck? It’s best to enter the Bespoke experience with a concept already in mind, like what P. Nguyen did with this exceptionally clean design; combining the base designs of what are arguably the two greatest Air Force 1s of all-time, he used the legendary ‘Linen‘ colorway and added a few touches of ‘Sakura Ueno‘ with the flower lasering on the heel-tab and the tongue-tag, and adds a bit of a twist with the suede upper. This impressively done hybrid is available for viewing below, so take a look and let us know what you think.
