More often than not, the drops from Nike’s Air Griffey lineup feature an eye-catching blast of color somewhere on the sneaker. And while we appreciate a sneaker’s ability to turn heads, sometimes something more neutral is necessary. Enter the Nike Air Griffey Max II in this tough looking colorway, which mixes up the gun-metal grey look with a flossy finish thanks to the metallic luster of the uppers. On bottom is the coveted Air Max sole, with a bit of white thrown in to lighten up the mood. This colorway doesn’t officially drop for another week or so, so if you’re still on the fence, make sure you have a look at the detailed pictures we’ve got for you after the jump. If you’re in need now, then hit up City Sole to get your pair, or grab them now on eBay.

The Nike Air Griffey Max II returned in 2011, and although it didn’t have quite the impact that the Air Griffey Max 1 did, the Max II is still considered to be one of the best Nike Retro releases of the year. This new Anthracite/Wolf Grey-Neo Turquoise colorway has a bit of a throwback Mariners flavor to it, but all in all this upcoming late-October release has all the makings of a hot commodity thanks to the season-specific two-toned grey colorway and the acute splashes of Neo Turquoise on the swoosh logo and Max Air unit. Expect these to start hitting Nike Sportswear retailers toward the end of October as these have a set release date of October 29th.

Grey out the upperon Ken Griffey Jr.’s signature Nike trainers and apply an aquatic blue color that can compliment pretty much every other color and also subtly refers to his time as a Mariner. It’s a recipe for success, as demonstrated by the instant sellout of the ‘Marina Blue’ Air Griffey Max 1 from last February. The AGM1 is still going strong with new retro releases and has spawned the Air Max JR, but don’t forget about about the successor to the AGM1 that’s getting its own share of retro love this year. The Nike Air Griffey Max II is constructed in a darker grey than the first but still has the same neutral appeal that’s sure to result in a short stay on store shelves. Various eye-catching aquatic shades have been central to the Ken Griffey’s Nike Training signature series since its inception with the Air Diamond Fury in 1995, this latest release among the purest blues from that category. The Nike Air Griffey Max II doesn’t match any of Junior’s MLB uniforms, but its mix of white leather with black and Photo Blue accents makes for a great summertime sneaker and one of the best white releases in the entire Nike Griffey lineage. Given that he played during his peak for the Seattle Mariners, it’s fitting that Ken Griffey Jr.’s Nike Training signature line is filled with watery shades like Freshwater and Chlorine Blue. But this latest release might call to mind the thousands of flash bulbs going off each time Junior lofted a home run over the Kingdome’s outfield wall, the Nike Air Griffey Max II in white and black, accented by Photo Blue. These pick up where the OG Blue Spark joints left off, and their July 9th release is sure to be one of the summer’s hits. Ken Griffey Jr. bounced around a bit towards the tail end of his career (like most aging stars do), but he might a righteous return to Safeco field for his last hurrah as a professional baseball player. He actually played a healthy portion of the 2009 season, slamming an extra 19 homers to run his all-time total to 630 round-trippers, and upon retiring last season, Griffey’s enjoyed the notoriety for having one of the best Nike Retro signature lines of the decade. He was even spotted making a cameo appearance in the Nike x Foot Locker – Cool Kids Get Fresh Air video, in which served up some fresh Air Max JRs to Amare Stoudemire. The Air Griffey Max II in the OG Freshwater colorway will be one of the hottest releases of the year is slated for an official release this 23rd, but you can grab them a bit early at Extra Butter or on eBay.

Hot on the heels of our latest look at the Air Max JR hybrid is this colorway borrowed from 2009′s initial Air Griffey Max 1 retro. Check out the Nike Air Griffey Max II (not to be confused with the Air Griffey Max GD II) in the ‘Fresh Water’ colorway that found the AGM1 leaving retail shelves as fast as they could be stocked. These joints feature a lockdown lacing system, carbon fiber heel counter and Max Air cushioning in the heel and forefoot. They’re not all that dissimilar to the original teal joints that will also retro later this year, so this begs the question, these or OGs? Click through to see more of the Fresh Water Griffey Max II and stick with Sneaker News for the exact release date, currently set for April.
