The Nike Air Max 1 was Tinker Hatfield's first Nike Air Max design. It is the first sneaker to feature visible Max Air and debuted in 1987. It is considered by many to be one of the greatest sneakers in history, and continues to be a coveted item in its various special edition colorways, limited issues, and collaborations. Are you ready to pay $180 for a pair of Air Max 1s? That’s the question that’s being posed by this new pair, which is actually of the Nike Air Max 1 Jacquard persuasion. The build here is a bit more complicated than that of the suede and mesh original, so we can certainly understand where the new price point comes from, but will heads be willing to fork out the extra money for a shoe that strays so far from Tinker’s ’87 Nike masterpiece? The Nike Air Max line has never been that focused on being a barefoot offering, especially since the Nike Free category emerged to really tackle that task, but in 2014 it’s apparently doing so. They don’t get any closer to barefoot along the bottoms though,; it’s mostly the upper that gets exposed to let a little bit more air in (We’ve also seen the sneakers billed as “Breeze” but we’re pretty sure that’s off). Today, Nike Sportswear celebrated Air Max Day on a global scale with the original Air Max 1 at the center of attention. On this day twenty-seven years ago, Nike released the first sneaker with visible Air, and from that shoe an endless string of footwear followed. While the original Tinker Hatfield design popped up a few times throughout the 90′s, it was the 21st Century that revitalized the shoe and re-established it as one of the best sneakers ever created, and while the original “Sport Red” colorway still possesses the rebellious heritage of the brand, there were several other notables that made the Air Max 1 such an icon.
