One reason the word “iconic” has become overused in sneaker journalism is that there are a handful of shoes so perfect that they’re both quintessential to a brand’s identity and continually available. The Nike Air Max 90 is one of those ubiquitous masterpieces. Tinker Hatfield’s third Max Air runner was so good that it practically owns a color that was only applied to it during the retro stages.

Well the good news is that the Nike Air Max “HomeTurf” Collection isn’t limited to the respective cities they were inspired by. The “Paris” Collection seen here might be the most unique of the bunch because it features three models that were given formidable upgrades in recent years, with the Air Classic BW, Air Max 1, and Air Max 90 getting reconstituted into the Air BW Gen II, Air Max 1 Fuse, and Air Max 90 Current – all of which featuring the special Paris-inspired lining. Nike Air Max 90 Current “Home Turf” – Paris

Used very sparingly since its 2009-10 peak, the Nike Air Max 90 Current returns as part of Nike Sportswear’s ‘Hometurf Collection‘. This new ‘Paris’ Air Max 90 Current (the only Current of the bunch) brings the Max-heel’d, Free-toed design back in a range of brown tones spread across the suede and mesh upper along with the new Dstnc Red (‘Distinct’ red?) shade on select accents. These have the same white/black striped sockliner common to all of the Paris Hometurf releases, and like the Air Max 2013s we showed you earlier, these will arrive at select NSW retailers this Saturday, March 30th, 2013.

Nike Air Max 90 Current VT LSR – Metallic Silver

We haven’t seen a new Nike Air Max 90 Current hit US retailers since 2010, but unlike the vast majority of Free-infused hybrids from Nike Sportswear to this point in history, it’s enjoying a second go-round.  Perhaps this is thanks in part to the Air Current’s retro release some twenty-plus odd years in the making, but even that forward thinking cult classic can’t compare to the awe inspired by the new pair of AM90 Current VTs above.  They’ve got that striking ‘moonboot’ vibe with an almost entirely Metallic Silver molded upper, not to mention the impressive attention to detail exhibited by laser etched ‘mesh’ in the spots where that material traditionally offers breathability on the Ninety.  Check them out up close after the jump and grab yours now from RMK.

Nike Air Max 90 Current VT LSR

Before Nike Sportswear went full-on modular and really nailed their hybrid sneaker designs, one of the earliest ways to spice up an old classic was adding a new sole. What started in the mid-’00s with all of the Air Max OGs getting 360′d, ended up toward the end of the decade with a fairly surprising variety of shoes taking on the deeply-grooved Free sole. The Air Max 90 was a natural fit with its rich running heritage, and when the Nike Air Max 90 Current released in 2008, it seemed like the name reflected the modernity of its alteration. A pending NSW retro run for the nearly forgotten Air Current will remind sneakerheads soon enough, but right now our attention can’t help but fixate on this metallic silver Nike Air Max 90 Current VT LSR. This is the first time VacTech construction has been paired with a Free bottom, but it’s the moonboot coloring that steals the show on this design (especially from a distance).  There’s also a hint of the short-lived Moire variant in the form of perforation gradients on the toe and ankle where mesh let the original AM90 breathe.  Have a closer look with some new images following the jump below, and let us know how these compare to NSW’s more explictly space-inspired NBA All-Star 2012 designs. via Kicks-crew
