nike air max history Nike Details the History of Air Max Sneakers

The Nike Air technology was one that had been floating around in Nike’s sole kits for years before the Air Max tooling made its debut. The brand knew that they had a cushioning platform superior to their competitors, but they just needed a way to show it off. You know the story from there: Tinker Hatfield visited the Georges Pompidou center in Paris and his revelation started a revolution. Wieden+Kennedy showed off the sneakers in the controversial “Revolution” spot and the blazing bright red sneakers started to show up on the feet of runners around the world.

Way back in early January, Nike announced that they were introducing “ICE”, “Lunar”, and “Jacquard” to the Air Max 90. After the first Air Max 90 Ice hit late last month, it appears that almost all of the buzz and attention is on the Ice version of Air Max 90. That being said, Nike has had a successful recent history of creating lunar versions of classic silhouettes, and the Air Max 90 surely won’t be an exception. This colorway, dropping in April, brings us the classic red white and blue colorway, with black added above the midsole to give the colorway a more unique feel. Let us know how you feel about these in the comments and stick with Sneaker News for more.

The Nike Air Max 90 Jacquard is actually a sneaker that’s got a bit more tweaking than the name suggests. You’ll notice that the tooling here is not the classic AM90 ride – the front of the sole has got the nubs of the Current build that we were introduced to at the tail end of the last decade. The colorway shown here is one of the more muted ones out there thanks to the mixture of black, cool grey, and dark grey that make up the tonal upper. Take a more detailed look at the shoes below and then grab these new Air Maxes from the team at Size?.

The Nike Air Max 90 Essential shown here is just a little bit late and a little bit lite on the white to be considered a Valentine’s Day release. The shoes eschew that combination for the most part and opt for a lite grey as far as the base is concerned – lite base grey actually. We’d anticipate that the sneakers will have a bit of a hard time sticking out given the hubbub surrounding the Nike Air Max 90 Ice, but there are certainly devotees of the standard silhouette that will show up for this one. Up next in the long line of tweaks to the Air Max lineage is the “Barefoot” version of the line previewed here. On display are both the Nike Air Max 90 and the Nike Air Max Light featuring that build, which seems to aim for a lightweight approach across the upper that minimizes material use. You’ll also notice a bit of the Current DNA on the 90 from the group thanks to the segmentation of the sole up towards the front. See each after the break and then tell us in the comments how you feel about this new Air Max development.
