While the Nike Air Max 95 continues to get souped up with everything from Hyperfuse to Flywire to the still nebulous Engineered Mesh, one spot out in the UK is still holding it down for the OG silhouette as strong as they’ve ever been. That spot is JD Sports, who have long been known for their proprietary Air Max colorways, the latest of which a black and red shown here that almost looks like an outtake from the Air Attack Pack from a couple years back what with the one-two blocking and the bits of patent leather. While Nike Running has introduced a fresh new spin on footwear with the new FlyKnit releases, the Retro models won’t get a bit of rest as Spring 2013 will reintroduce the Nike Running heritage in a refreshed ‘Engineered Mesh’ construction. We’ve seen EM on the Air Max 1, 90, and 97, so here’s a first look at the Air Max 95 of that family tree; we can certainly expect the OG ‘Neon’ colorway to arrive in Spring 2013, with the Engineered Mesh comprising the upper ‘ribs’ of the 95 build. A full viewing of the Air Max 95 EM is just below, so take a look and let us know if you think this contemporary mesh is a right fit for the older designs of the 80′s/90′s. Photo: TSG

NIKE PACK WEEK
Finishing off this week of bundles of Nike footwear here in Classics Revisited tied together by a distinct theme is the trio of Air Max releases from 2006 called the ‘Kashima Antlers’ Pack. This unique set was a tribute to the Kashima Antlers professional football club in Japan – the most successful club in the history of the Japan League Division 1 since its inception in 1993, but the origin of the Antlers club dates back to 1947. The Nike ‘Kashima Antlers’ Pack featured three significant models; the Air Max 95 and the Air Max 97, both of which are widely popular in Japan, and the Air Max 360, which debuted in late January of 2006. Of the three colorways, only the Air Max 360 is designed with the Kashima Antlers kit colors in mind (White, Black, and Red), but all three compositions capture a singular theme that were widely popular when the Kashima Antlers Pack was launched globally in late February.
The Air Max 95 features the pristine Gold and Royal colorway, using the Beige color as an accent on the upper mesh (Beige is on the official Kashima Antlers club crest). The Air Max 360 featured the widely popular laser detailing on the upper with Kashima Antlers FC written in Japanese on the tongue. The most popular and coveted of the entire Pack is the Air Max 97, which boasted the much-beloved elephant print on the upper with a teal-colored Max Air unit. The ’97 also featured Kashima Antlers branding on the tongue as well as on the heel pull-tab. Included in this special edition release was a custom tissue paper that lined the box as well as an envelope containing mini postcards of the world’s most significant football clubs – Man U. and Boca Jr’s to name a couple. Check out a gallery of all three from the ‘Kashima Antlers’ Pack below, and let us know if you’ve got any of these in your Air Max collection!

When Jay Meschter first developed Flywire threads for Nike, did he believe it would be in such widespread use today? The primary goal of this Vectran-composed thread was to reduce weight and maximize support, but with the design inspired by a suspension bridge, Flywire became as much of a visual benchmark as it was an engineering marvel. From the original Hyperdunk to this remixed Air Max 95, Flywire continues to be in prevalent use, but is this Air Max 95 ‘Flywire’ perhaps taking away the soul of the Air Max 95? For purists, the recent no-sew and 360 Air’ed out models were mere afterthoughts, for those who embrace the newer technology on older models, Spring 2013 is looking mighty fine. Check out the four colorways of the Air Max 95+ BB Flywire (dropping Spring 2013) and let us know what you think. Photos: TSG

Just how much Air does one need? The Air Max 1 could be too little, the Air Max 95 might be too much, but the Air Max 90 could be juuuust right. While all three models are perfect for any Air Max fan, sneaker customizer Kiketotheverse adopts the furry ‘Three Bears’ concept from the SB Dunks to the Air Max 1, 90, and 95, coloring each in the appropriate Low, Mid, and High colorways (however, the youngest of the three Air Max releases has been appointed as the ‘Papa’) with the fuzzy bear exterior protruding out from the mesh panels. Surely one of the best custom iterations of one of the quirkiest sneaker releases of all-time, so peep the gallery below and we’ll an eye out on future custom works from Kiketotheverse.

NIKE PACK WEEK
Yesterday’s Nike ‘Clerks’ Pack feature in Classics Revisited was a reward of sorts to a cluster of Nike’s most reputable sneaker shops in the West Coast and in London. But other Packs are born in-house and encircle a pre-made concept, like 2006′s ‘Fantastic Four’ Pack. Not surprisingly, the Nike ‘Fantastic Four’ Pack featured four models representing each of the four members of the Marvel Comics superhero team – the Air Max 90 (Mr. Fantastic), Air Force 1 Low (Invisible Woman), Dunk High (The Thing), and Air Max 95 (Human Torch). The opposing force to the ‘Fantastic Four’ Pack was the team’s long-standing rival Dr. Doom, who took form in the Air Foamposite Pro.
The fictional Fantastic Four is recognized primarily for their unique physical abilities that arose as a result of exposure to cosmic rays in outer space. Likewise, the Nike ‘Fantastic Four’ Pack were each distinguishable not only be colorway, but from the materials that were used to build each shoe; the Air Max 90 featured a canvas-like material, the Air Force 1 Low had a transparent upper, the Dunk High used an interesting material that had a rocky texture, and the Air Max 95 utilized patent leather to emanate blazing-hot flames. The Fantastic Four Pack was already released roughly one year after Fantastic Four was produced into a feature film. While none of the ‘Fantastic Four’ releases were featured in our previous Classics features of the respective models, the entire Pack as a whole is certainly one of the more memorable drops in ‘Pack’ history. More of the set below, so take a look and let us know which of the Fantastic Four you have in your collection!

NIKE AIR MAX 95 WEEK
Closing out this week’s featurette of the Air Max 95 in our Classics Revisited column is one of the earliest Nike x Football collaborations and certainly one of the most unique colorways in the shoe’s history – the Air Max 95 ‘Juventus’. This 2003 release was created as a tribute to one of the sport’s most historic clubs, which also owns the distinction as one of the oldest clubs ever and certainly one of the most historically respected and influential in its home country of Italy. Despite some scandalous developments involving the club over the last decade, Juventus has orchestrated a ‘comeback’ by accomplishing some notable feats in their return to Serie A, and even opened up a new stadium this past September.
The club’s signature colors is the unmistakable white/black bold-striped shirts, finished off with hints of golden yellow; these colors have been worn by the team for over a century, and also make up the club’s official Juventus F.C. badge even in its most recent form. Aside from the striped distinction, Juventus is also marked by two golden stars representing their 20 Serie A championships. which sit above the badge and on the embroidered tongue of Air Max 95. The team is also represented by a pink color, which is a throwback to an old jersey worn by the team prior to the white/black striped shirts, but the more prevalent inspiration undoubtedly lies within the colorway selected for Air Max 95. If you’ve got the Juventus 95s in your stash, consider yourself a true Air Max 95 fanatic!
