Its updated honeycomb cushioning unit the epitome of a double-edged sword, the Nike Air Max Tailwind 96-12 introduces a new generation to a dope silo and has older sneakerheads clamoring for an OG retro. A blend of Dark and Wolf Greys with a white midsole and Game Royal accents makes for a crisp and cool look that’s something like the antithesis of the black/Gym Red edition that’d most recently touched down. Who wouldn’t want Nike to Retro all of it’s 90′s sneakers in their original forms? One can wear gems like the above Air Max Tailwind ’96 without fear of a complete midsole destruction, but there’s an understandable hesitation with shoes like the Air Max Tailwind 96 12, which uses the latest Tailwind midsole cushioning. These mix-ups of old and new are something you need to get used to because it’s not stopping here, so if you’ve been waiting for the return of the ’96 edition of the Tailwinds, the ’96 12′ is the best you’re gonna get! Keeping pace alongside the flagship Air Max series over the years have been several other noteworthy branches from the Nike Running family tree. Names like Pegasus, Structure (Triax) and Tailwind have each carried the baton at various points throughout history, and now we see a model born during an Olympic summer resurrected to run with the benefit of performance enhancement courtesy of its updated cushioning. The Nike Air Max Tailwind 96-12 is exactly what its name would suggest, a blend of the Air Max Tailwind from 1996 coupled with the full-length honeycomb unit you’ll find in stores under the Air Max Tailwind+ 4. Also in stores like Social Status that carry Nike Sportswear product, you’ll find this pair of 96-12s in an OG colorup, a shoe that appears in more images after the jump below.

Nike Sportswear’s retro approach of ‘Frankenstein-ing’ the new with the old has been one of the hot-button sneaker topics lately. Some have garnered a surprising amount of praise, like the Nike Huarache Free 2012 and the Nike Huarache Basketball 2012, but others, like the upcoming Air Max Tailwind 96-12, are still up for debate. Taking the classic silhouette of the 1996 Air Max Tailwind with the newly designed Tailwind Max Air unit, the Air Max Tailwind 96-12 will arrive in Summer 2012 and will certainly conjure up pleasant memories of the past, or remind us that a classic has been unnecessarily changed.
