Sneaker News is jumping back into the Sneakerpedia archives once again. What’s the topic this time? We wanted to give a little bit more shine to the Visible Air technology, Tinker’s brainchild that quietly celebrated its 25th anniversary as of last year. We dug through the various collections on display over at Sneakerpedia in an attempt to uncover some of the most revered, aesthetically striking, and technologically advanced vis-Air sporting sneakers over the years. The result is a visual history of the progression of Nike’s Air Max revolution from 1987 all the way up to 2012. Join us after the jump for a look at the sneakers selected, some OG and some not, and make sure you head to Sneakerpedia to see what other gems are waiting to be discovered.

Nike Air Max2 CB ’94 – Blake Griffin “Shattered Backboard” Customs by Laptop LaSane

nike air max2 cb 94 blake griffin shattered backboard Nike Air Max2 CB 94 Blake Griffin Shattered Backboard Customs by Laptop LaSane

Sneaker customizer Laptop LaSane pays tribute to not one, but two of powerful big-men with this sneaker custom – Charles Barkley, who once terrorized the league by playing larger than his size, and Blake Griffin, whose throwdowns are as vicious as they are entertaining. While neither player has had the distinction of shattering an NBA backboard, both have that power-dunking style that have defenders cowering in fear whenever they elevate above the rim. We almost never see the Nike Air Max2 CB ’94 be used as a custom, but Laptop LaSane does quite the job by implementing the colors of the Western Conference All-Stars and creating an elephant-print style graphic mimicking a shattered backboard. A full gallery is below so take a look and let us know what you think!

Sneaker Con is a major attraction for anyone who loves sneakers and the surrounding atmosphere, and we’ve seen attendees from all walks of life step through Sneaker Con entrances and leave satisfied. Some of the sneaker game’s most notable figures are regulars at these events, and even at the most recent NYC showing in June, hip-hop culture OG Ed Lover and New York Knicks guard Iman Shumpert came through to spend their Summer afternoons surrounded by the best footwear in the world. During this weekend’s Miami showing, Sneaker Con welcomed Fat Joe, one of most active and longest-running members of the sneaker cub-culture; wearing a pair of the Nike Air Max2 CB ’94 ‘Derrty’ (the special edition made for Nelly), Fat Joe browsed around and copped a pair of the Air Jordan II ‘Melo’ for his own collection. For Joe, it was ‘Mission Accomplished’ at Sneaker Con, so check him out below and don’t miss out on the next Sneaker Con near you, because it’s coming soon!

20 Years Of Nike Basketball Design: Air Max2 CB (1994)

20 years nike bball air max2 cb 1 20 Years Of Nike Basketball Design: Air Max2 CB (1994)

As Nike Basketball continues its look back over twenty years of game changing designs, we’re reminded that the Air Jordan Legacy could have filled up half of the list (or perhaps one of its own). We see the connections to MJ in Tinker and company’s Air Flight Huarache and Air Raid designs and now with the pair pictured above, the other half of these features have focused on a key early ’90s rival. After he won a gold at Barcelona ’92 in the Air Force 180, Hall of Fame power forward Charles Barkley turned in his finest season and met up with MJ in the 1993 Finals. An MVP-level effort wasn’t enough for Sir Charles to capture that first championship, so Beaverton went back to the drawing board to create a product that perfectly married, in Hatfield’s words: “The outlandishness of Charles’ persona and the beauty of the product”

The Nike Air Max2 CB (’94) reflected Chuck’s rebellious persona thanks to designer Tracy Teague having the kind of freedom of expression to which Barkley alluded in his infamous ‘Role Model’ ad. Accordingly, the AM2 CB is an imposingly aggressive design equipped to handle sudden outbursts as the Round Mound of Rebound continued to play above his size. Features like straitjacket-inspired lockdown straps, reinforced ghillie lacing and a ferocious, toothy midsole made this design so memorable it was recently resurrected as the basis for Nike Sportswear’s Air Max Barkley, but longtime fans and collectors recognize the original style as irreplaceable. Check out some of the early sketches and OG colorways after the jump below, let us know where Charles Barkley ranks in the pantheon of great signature ballers and stick with Sneaker News as we examine twenty years of bold basketball design.

Nike Air Max Barkley – Black – Safety Orange – Pro Purple

The phrase ‘slimmed-down Barkleys’ doesn’t apply to just the Nike Air Max Barkley, but Charles Barkley himself! The round mound of rebound recently shed 38 lbs. by following the celebrity-endorsed fad diet plan, so it’s quite fitting that the slimmed-down Air Max2 CB ’94 arrives at the same time. Featuring the same infrastructure as the ’94 classic but with lighter, more breathable materials, the Air Max Barkley allows ballers to rock these on the court with an emphasized level of comfort that has been the standard with the super-sleek Hyperdunk/Hyperfuses of today. You can cop this classics PHX Suns colorway right now by heading to Nikestore, but get a better look after the jump.

Nike Air Max2 CB ’94 – Varsity Red Rip-Stop

September 6th, 2011 by | 12 comments

Charles Barkley was the face of the Nike Force during the 90′s, and what a fitting face it was. The foul-mouthed power forward with a penchant for low-post scoring, rebounding, and getting under the skin of oppoents rocked some of the fiercest looking kicks in Nike history, like the Nike Air Max2 CB ’94. It’s due up for a remastering in the form of the Nike Air Max Barkley (a Hyperfuse-uppered version of the CB ’94), but before we reach that point, check out this tonal varsity red colorway; it features rugged rip-stop nylon on the upper, with white contrast stitching along the synthetic leather giving an added level of military-style appeal. These are a House of Hoops exclusive so head there to check ‘em out in person, but do so after you peep the detailed shots after the jump. via LTD-Online.
