One of the undisputed leaders in the color-swap customs movement has taken another step toward the crown with a smartly implemented reprisal of this sneakerhead’s dream of a palette. Mache made this Nike Air Penny II a ’112′ custom by adding grey to the mudguard tier, but not just for the balancing effect afforded to the high contrast ‘Cyber’ drop. It’s actually two tones of grey on that layer that comprise a hand-etched Elephant print, that brings to life this interpretation of DJ Clark Kent’s signature blend. So these are more of a mash-up than a swap; what might have happened had he used a ‘Flamingo’-like confetti print or maybe Safari for the 25th anniversary of Tinker’s ‘Air Pack’? As the climate gets increasingly warmer, sneaker colorways change in accordance with the milder temperatures – so what better than a redux of the refreshing ‘Sprite’ colorway on one of the best Air Penny designs in history? Sneaker News gave you a first look at the Air Penny II ‘Sprite’ earlier this week, and without surprise, the response was very positive among the Nike Retro and Air Penny collective. The Air Penny II ‘Sprite’ was originally scheduled to drop as a June release, but retailers including House of Hoops as well as select Foot Locker locations will release them beginning this weekend as a special Memorial Day treat, so keep those locations in mind if you’re looking to get yours. The Air Penny renaissance at Nike Sportswear continues as Foamposites and Penny’s own Nike Basketball signatures are among today’s most popular releases. And speaking of today’s best drops, this one might take the cake for May 25th, a black nubuck Nike Air Penny II whose Cyber accents have these resembling the ‘Highligher’ Air Max Penny 1 that hit House of Hoops just over a year ago. They’re the perfect foil to the Soar-uppered ‘Sprite’ Penny 2, but with all this neon-accented goodness, how will you choose which pair to purchase? Both of them are limited releases that you’ll be able to find in-store at NSW shops like this black pair at Concepts, and you can see more images after the jump below.

The Miami-inspired Nike Air Penny II that dropped in 2009 didn’t draw as much attention as the recent releases, perhaps because it wasn’t surrounded by as much ‘heat’. The recent success of the Foamposite series as well as hybrids like the Half Cent and Zoom Rookie has made anything with Penny Hardaway’s ’1c’ insignia a must-have, so it’s easy to predict a quick sell-out for this latest Air Penny 2 release. These ‘Sprite’ Penny IIs come to market with a Soar base layer accented by Cyber hits and the signature swooping midsole in white, an energetic look soon to be joined by a black pair that’s arguably even more of a neck-breaker. We’re still waiting to see when the latter will arrive, but the ‘Sprite’ Air Penny II is hitting the shelves at Nike Sportswear retailers like Premier already, so check out a new round of photos below and let us know which of these neon-accented pairs you’re more likely to cop.

The popular LeBron colorways have had a serious effect on the sneaker game, has it not? Anything teal/pink is ‘South Beach’, Blue/Orange is now shared between the Knicks and the Cavs ‘Hardwood Classic’, and even the royal/volt has adopted the ‘Sprite’ without fail. While this upcoming Soar/Cyber colorway isn’t an official Sprite colorway by any means (and the accompanying Black/Cyber has no ties to it either), these Penny IIs, which Sneaker News broke the news on this past Monday, quickly took on that ‘Sprite’ name. Again, these are slated to hit retailers this June for $155, but if you’re already set on copping and want ‘em ahead of time, cop them now from croatianstyle on eBay.

On Monday evening, Sneaker News provided you first images and exclusive release information of the Nike Air Penny II in the energetic Soar/Cyber colorway, slated to release this June at a retail price of $155. Based on early catalog images, the Soar/Cyber would be accompanied by a Black/Cyber colorway, seen here; it’s got that HoH-style ‘Highlighter Pack’ feel to it, but these won’t be a HoH exclusive as chain retailers such as Footaction are confirmed to receive these in store. It’s rather impressive that the Air Penny continues to outwork Nike’s contemporary signature models with an astounding four signature releases in 2012 (Air Foamposite One, Zoom Rookie, Air Penny II, and Air Penny V). Arriving at retailers this June is the Nike Air Penny II in Soar/Cyber-White-Black, previewed in mid-January as a set of Quickstrike releases; Sneaker News now brings you an exclusive first look at this June 2012 drop, which features the familiar ‘Sprite’ ensemble on the classic Air Penny II model.
