For better or worse, 2012 was a defining year for the sneaker world and all that it encompasses. It was a year that saw certain shoes throw the laws of supply and demand so out of whack, that brands and retailers had to completely rethink the way they sell shoes to the public just to keep the peace. If you were willing to put in some legwork or, better yet, had the right connections, it was a banner year for sneaker enthusiasts. “Must-have” releases seemed to be at an all-time high and nearly every weekend offered up some sort of temptation for consumers. 2012 saw the release of some of the most eagerly anticipated and passionately sought-after sneakers the game had ever seen and it’s safe to say that things will never be the same again.
In between those, there were plenty of other desirable targets along the way, from the special limited editions and collaborations to beloved Retro returns and promising new designs and innovations. There were even a few certified sleeper hits that organically carved out their place among the year’s best releases. Due to an exponentially expanding consumer base and a heightened level of product awareness, you might not have been able to get your hands on every shoe you hunted for in 2012, but there was certainly no shortage of solid alternatives ripe for the picking in their absence.

A perfect mix of today’s scorching hot animal print trend and Penny Hardaway’s own history, the Nike Air Penny V ‘Memphis’ represents the most appealing combination centered around the southwestern Tennessee university’s school colors since Coach Cal brought Derrick Rose to The Grindhouse. The symmetry runs deep in this blue, black and white colorup whose Tigers stripes are also reminiscent of the pinstripes from classic Orlando Magic jerseys that set the tone for the early Air Penny colorways. It looks like these will have to wait until next year as we’re still awaiting confirmation on the release date, so stick with Sneaker News for the latest and check out a new set of photos after the jump below.

With the Air Penny firmly established as the ‘Signature Sportswear’ sneaker for Nike, will we ever so a limit to possible colorways? The Air Penny V has already released in a slew of colorways, from the baseline ‘Orlando Magic’ to the enticing ‘Miami Dolphins’, but with this incredible ‘Bright Crimson’ aka ‘Sunburst’ on its way in the coming months, it’s clear that colorizing an Air Penny isn’t limited to the teams he’s played for. 2012 holds just one more release for the Nike Air Penny V – that would be the ‘Tour Yellow’ colorway pictured here that ends up pretty far outside the range of NBA squad associated pairs that have been popping up on the story telling side of this new design. The Nike Air Penny V ‘Tour Yellow’ also deviates from the norm via the subtle graphics whipped around the upper, with the back half getting a whispy floral print. Yesterday’s two-part featurette of Penny Hardaway’s personal collection featured quite a number of Penny V colorways, but up until this year’s release of the ‘Memphis Blues’ Nike Zoom Rookie LWP, there really hasn’t been a true Memphis Tigers tribute. That’s much in part due to the fact that Memphis’ colors and the most popular Penny composition of Royal, White, and Black overlap, but it’s good to see the Tigers getting their shine with this upcoming Penny V release. Matched with a nice detailing of stripes on the midsole and upper, this Air Penny V captures Penny’s alma mater perfectly (a small hint of orange would be nice). The most alluring feature of the Suns colorway of the Penny V is undoubtedly the gradient midsole, which seamlessly evolves from purple to pink to orange to capture a dazzling Phoenix-inspired sunset. Jason Negron, who has made his name swapping out outsoles in Foams, spins off his own calling card and switches up the midsole on these, matching the gradient colorization on the midsole to the outsole as well as on the upper paneling that surrounds the Hyperfuse material. The debut release of the Nike Air Penny V was in a special red/black/white colorway that paid tribute to Penny’s High School, so one could surmise that a ‘Memphis’ version would be on the way. Turns out this Royal/Black/White colorway we saw not long ago is indeed that Memphis Tigers package, complete with school colors and Tiger-stripes on the midsole and upper. So this past week of releases, with Black Friday falling right at the center, was one of the most jam-packed spans of sneaker offerings we’ve ever experienced.
