Placerville, CA’s Red Hawk Casino is famous for its penny slot jackpots, a symbol of the kind of once-in-a-lifetime luck the Orlando Magic struck in 1993 when they followed up the previous season’s #1 pick of Shaquille O’Neil with the Robin to his Batman. Or was that ‘Lil Penny to his Superman? An even lil-er Penny Hardaway made his way to O-Town by way of Memphis, TN, both its university and the public school system responsible for the Treadwell High School Eagles. This new Nike Air Penny V ’Red Eagle’ brings us back to Anfernee’s alma mater, the Birthplace of Rock n Roll and the home of Treadwell’s Eagles who give the shoe its aggressive colorway. Nike Sportswear head Gentry Humphrey was on hand at the recent Shanghai Nike Festival of Sport event to show off this ‘Red Eagle’ Penny V and you can see more images after the jump below. Let us know which colorway is best as we approach the debut drop and stick with Sneaker News for all the US release dates.

Almost one month Sneaker News gave you a first look at the looming Nike Air Penny V in the ‘Invisibility Cloak’ colorway, and while the name suggests a clandestine aura, there’s nothing unassuming about the shoe. Featuring an iridescent gradient-like applique on the midsole similar to the Kobe VII release of February, the Air Penny V receives an immediate upgrade in style with the amazing color-blocking and shimmering borders along the Hyperfuse upper. As with all Penny sneakers, the one-cent logo is proudly stamped on the tongue of the shoes, with additional details on the heel pull-tabs. We’ve got another ‘on-feet’ shot of the Air Penny V ‘Invisibility Cloak’ just below, so take a look and stay tuned to Sneaker News for more updates and release information.

For a city known for the “Happiest Place on Earth”, Orlando sure has experienced some tough luck when it comes to their hometown Magic. Following an unprecedentedly bountiful stretch of NBA Drafts in the early-mid ’90s, O-Town lost Shaq to free agency and never got to see how the dream pairing of Tracy McGrady and Grant Hill would turn out, thanks to injuries not totally dissimilar to those that prevented the above pictured model (or at least its name) from releasing a decade ago. So instead of dwelling on whether the basketball gods will allow the second Superman to stick around, let’s take the opportunity to imagine a positive ‘what if’ in the form of the new Nike Air Penny V. This ’Orlando’ Penny 5 takes on the look that was among the most popular in the late ’90s, a black-based build with white and royal accents that perfectly integrates the pinstriped mesh that debuted on the Air Penny 1 some seventeen years ago. Have a closer look after the jump, let us know which Air Penny V colorway you like best so far and stick with Sneaker News for all of the release dates (this pair’s still on track for a November drop). While the complete details regarding the materials and tooling of the upcoming Nike Air Penny V have been revealed, we can see that Nike crammed as much as it could (within the boundaries of the $160 MSRP) into this 1-Cent branded shoe. What we do see is a uniquely designed 180-degree Max Air unit on the Heel and what appears to be a thin, breathable mesh build on the upper – overall a similar concept to what we saw with the Nike LeBron 9 (sans Flywire). While the Air Penny V is scheduled for a debut in November in the quintessential ‘Orlando’ colorway, this energetic ‘Suns’ colorway is set to follow in December, so check out the close-up shots of this upcoming release below and stay tuned to Sneaker News for more updates. The iridescent nature of a snake’s skin was a perfect fit for the Nike Zoom Kobe VII, making this past February’s release of the Kobe VII ‘Invisibility Cloak’ one of the sleeper hits of the year. But does it fit with the Air Penny V? Here’s a first look at the Nike Air Penny V ‘Invisibility Cloak’; it features the same teal/purple iridescent colorization (giving it a sick gradient-effect at different angles) on the midsole as well as on the borders of the ventilated Hyperfuse-like windows. Thus far, the Penny V has been living on the edge with some insane colorways, like this version as well as the three 2013 samples previewed earlier this month. Thoughts on this colorway? Let us know below and we’ll keep you updated with more. via thegameisafoot on NT

There are countless “what could’ve been” stories that get told about professional star-athletes who never made it big, with injuries often playing the pivotal re-director of career paths from glory to afterthought. Penny Hardaway is undoubtedly one of the major names in that category, but thanks to Nike’s ability to keep the Penny name alive, the former Orlando superstar is enjoying a level of stardom in the sneaker game rivaled by Michael Jordan and Nike Basketball’s current Big Three hoop athletes. Nevermind the Foamposites – the Penny V is the true ‘next chapter’ of the Nike x Penny saga, and with the classic ‘Orlando’ serving as the anchor to the fifth signature shoe, it’s clear that Nike has plan of keeping the Penny name alive for years to come. This Holiday 2012 release is one of the most anticipated of the year, so we’ll keep you updated as the Penny V updates roll through, but cop ‘em early if you’d like by visiting the auction from thelast60 on eBay.

We’re used to the basketball sneakers of various legends living on beyond the career of the associated player, but having them straight up resurrected for an all new design is a bit of a new thing. Given the way the Nike Air Penny line’s stock has risen over the past couple of years with the Foamposite obsession we can certainly see where Nike Sportswear is coming from with this one though, and for what its worth the pairs on tap for the Nike Air Penny V seem to be covering the bases as far as the classic colorways. Anchoring a group of geographically inclined combos is the ‘Orlando’ shown here, coming as a nod to the squad Penny spent the most time with in the NBA. Click through for all the shots and let us know which Air Penny V you’re looking forward to the most. Photos: Marquee Sole
