Nike Air Penny V – New Green – Safety Orange – White

Penny Hardaway’s impression in today’s sneaker game is about to get a bit deeper with this Holiday’s debut of the Nike Air Penny V – his fifth signature shoe and first post-career signature basketball model. Borrowing key details from past models and combining them with both new-age and revised comfort technology, the Nike Air Penny V captures that on-court performance vibe while equally sharing a street-sensible style. Simply put, these will go hard on the court, and harder with a pair of jeans. Here we have a first look at an upcoming New Green/Safety Orange-White colorway that is set to hit stores this December; it’s got a Miami-like vibe with the Dolphins-esque colorway (anything Miami these days seems to be an utter hit), although the direct tie-in of this colorway is yet to be revealed. Now that we’ve got another good look at the Air Penny V, what are your thoughts? Photo: JordanPP30 on NT

Nike Air Penny 5

One of the biggest headlines of yesterday’s news was the first look at the Nike Air Penny V – the alleged fifth signature sneaker of the Air Penny line that was discontinued after the Air Penny IV (until the revelation of the Air 1/2 Cent in 2009). Many have praised the shoe for its 90′s-style design motifs, as it opts for wavy lines and bulbous-y midsoles rather than the jagged, tech look of the Hyperdunk, Kobe, and other Eric Avar classics. This new side-profile shot of the Nike Air Penny V reveals once more the ribbed midsole with what appears to be a newly-designed visible Max Air unit, a pinstriped tongue, and what appears to be a lightweight Hyperfuse-like material on the upper. It’s clear that the Air Penny V was designed in mind of a true continuation of the Air Penny legacy rather than as a contemporary 2012+ shoe, bringing a level of old-school ideas to Nike’s current push of technology and hgh-performance engineering. Nike Air Penny V

It’s rather interesting to know that Nike’s most popular signature athlete of the 1990′s had just four signature shoes (and one unofficial sig – the Air Foamposite One). It’s true that the Air Penny volumes are rather short-lived, but it’s safe to say that the brief account is one of the most celebrated of all-time. With the massive success of the Foamposite as well as the first two Air Penny models, it can leave us wondering the potential of a longer legacy of Air Pennys. In what some might perceive as an unprecedented move, Nike Basketball is poised to introduced the fifth Air Penny signature – the Nike Air Penny V; this first clear look at the recently trending topic reveals quite a number of familiar design cues from the Penny line and post-Penny productions, like the rounded outsole and ridged midsole.

It’s almost as if the design co. picked up right where they left off, which is probably why the Air Penny V looks so darn familiar. What many may not realize is that there was in fact a fifth Air Penny shoe that, at the outset, was intended to continue the Air Penny line, but it never bore the name – that shoe is none other than the Nike Air 3 LE, which is commonly known as one of Kevin Garnett’s signature shoes. Nike Sportswear Holiday 2012 Basketball Preview

Penny Hardaway won Olympic gold with Dream Team II at the 1996 Atlanta Games, but we haven’t seen any of his Nike Sportswear retro and hybrid series yet connected with this summer’s USAB blowout.  Instead, NSW’s going to be emphasizing Penny in the fourth quarter of 2012 along with one of his teammates from the XXVI Olympiad.  Moving left to right in the image above, we see our first glimpse of the new Nike Air Penny V that seeks to continue Anfernee’s legacy while introducing some new twists.  You can also count on a copper Zoom Rookie LWP as well as the Air Flight 1 joining a couple of older looking designs that seem inspired by David Robinson‘s Air Force 180 High (though they seem to lack an inflation system of any sort), perhaps similar to the PR1 we saw imitating the classic Air Pressure.  Click through to see more, let us know which makes you most excited and stick with Sneaker News for each pair’s release info.  via HC
