NIKE AIR SAFARI The Nike Air Safari is a Tinker Hatfield designed Nike model that released originally in 1987. The sneaker was one of the first Nike models to extend beyond the world of sport, with Hatfield’s original intent being to create a sort of luxury sneaker. The model features the ‘safari’ print on the front and back ends, a motif that has been used in countless designs since.

When Sneaker News first showed you preview images of Nike Sportswear’s summer 2012 Air Safari offerings just before the turn of the year, we noted that two pairs’ chalky outsoles seemed a clear indication of their VNTG status. All four of those were depicted with beige midsoles which could either be pre-yellowing or just another balancing force on a quartet of smartly selected palettes, but now we can expect all of them to be Vintage drops with yesterday’s Nike Air Safari VNTG release and the same details emerging on the also-gumsoled Mesa Orange and Black Tea edition. These are the closest to the 25th birthday edition but still maintain a respectful distance that allows a touch of today’s clean colorblocking, and you’ll find them available now at NSW stores like Burner.

nike air safari suede nylon 1 Nike Air Safari Suede Nylon | Fall 2012

Celebrating a quarter-century of history is the Nike Air Safari, one of Tinker Hatfield’s original 5 of 1987 that has continued to spray out influential measures of excellence and style throughout its existence. How will Nike Sportswear pay homage to this classic? Well, the quirky sneaker, which Tinker called one of the earliest ‘Lifestyle’ running sneakers, will receive a mass distribution in various forms – a redone Lunar Safari, the Safari exploration for the Air Force 1 iD, and of course, in its original ’87 form. Here we have a first look at some Fall 2012 drops that feature suede and nylon uppers paired with the Safari-print material, previewed a few months back here on Sneaker News. While we don’t have a full viewing of this new style, we do get a solid idea of what to expect once they hit stores later this year. Your thoughts? Let us know in the comments below. via providermag

Nike Air Safari – Beige – Yellow – Black

A safari excursion on the moon is something that won’t happen for very long, but the Nike Lunar Safari, on the other hand, is a confirmed ‘go’ later this year. Of course, you can’t celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the shoe by leaving out THE shoe, so here’s a look at one upcoming Air Safari release that was spotted at the Nike Sportswear preview during Tuesday morning’s event in New York City; this Air Safari uses an outdoors-y beige tone on the safari print and combines it with the Livestrong combo of black and yellow on the upper.  The funkiest feature of this Safari is the camouflage-like detailing on the outsole that was first seen on a black/pink sample of the Safari we saw not long ago. We’ve got additional angles of this upcoming release below the jump so take a look and stick with Sneaker News for more Nike Safari updates and developments.

Nike Air Safari Celebrates 25th Anniversary

nike air safari 25th anniversary summary Nike Air Safari Celebrates 25th Anniversary

History can always be retold through books and word-of-mouth, but when it comes to sneakers, nothing refreshes an old spirit better than the re-release of a shoe. Celebrating its 25th Anniversary is the Nike Air Safari, which debuted in 1987 as a slump-buster of sorts, according to designer Tinker Hatfield, who forged ahead with fellow innovative minds like Mark Parker, Sandy Bodecker, and a few others to perform experiments with unique materials and designs. The Air Safari was part of the game-changing ‘Air Pack’ of 1987, which featured the Air Max 1, Air Trainer 1, Air Revolution, and Air Sock; the inspiration behind the famous Safari print came from a high-end furniture store in New York City, which displayed couches and coffee-tables that were priced in the tens of thousands. One particular piece of furniture that caught Tinker’s attention was a couch that was fashioned in an exotic ostrich skin – something Tinker had never seen before. He quickly discovered that this exotic, high-end approach was reserved for the upper, upper class (aka, the insanely rich), and he chose to transfer that level of luxury to a running shoe.

The result was the Air Safari, which featured a stylized version of that influential ostrich skin, but it was Tinker’s intention that the Air Safari serve not only as a performance running shoe, but as a casual shoe as well. Tinker further likened the shoe to an Aston Martin, mentioning that like the luxury car brand, the Safari was indeed capable of serving as a superb high-performance shoe, only people wore them for fashion. Since its debut in ’87, the Air Safari has reached cult status and has become a hit-or-miss type item in the re-sale market, selling anywhere from less than what you’d expect to more than double your budget. It’s been quite some time since the Air Safari re-released in the original colorways (the last Retro falling in the early 00′s), but the iconic print has popped its head out several times on Dunks, Air Force 180s, Air Maxes, and rather prominently in 2010′s CR Mercurial Vapor III football boot. With 2012 marking the Silver Anniversary of the Air Safari, this famed cult classic is poised for a much-anticipated rejuvenation with a plethora of new colorways and hybridizations already confirmed, so check out the gallery of detailed images of the original colorway below and let us know if you’re a fan of this iconic design!

Nike Air Safari – Orange – Black

nike air safari orange black Nike Air Safari Orange Black

Sneaker News showed you an earthy quartet of Nike Air Safari previews just before the turn of the year, along with the expectation that they’d be hitting retailers in the second quarter of 2012.  Looks like that’s changed for at least one of the pairs, as the orange and black pair is the first to pop up in images set in the real world, and seems now to be slated for the fall season.  This uniquely rustic yet vibrant colorup typifies the rest of the set, so the presence of a green/yellow edition in the background suggests it might be this whole pack that gets pushed back; will they be worth the wait?  Let us know what you think about Nike’s ‘other’ 1987 runner and stick with us for word on the US release date.  via Sneaker Lounge

Nike Air Safari – Summer 2012

nike air safari summer 2012 5 Nike Air Safari Summer 2012

The Nike Air Safari will triumphantly return once again in 2012, and unlike the upcoming ‘Suede Pack’ that we gave you an exclusive look on, these four Air Safaris use…Safari print. Coming in four rusting color-combinations with some rugged materials, each of the four Air Safaris captures that outdoor motif with unsurprising ease. Two of the colorways look to be VNTG offerings as well, as they featured the white chalky oxidation treatment on the outsoles. We’ve got individual shots of all four after the jump so take a look and let us know what you think, and be sure to stick with Sneaker News for more Nike 2012 releases.

nike safari deconstruct summary Nike Lunar Safari

Nike is reliving its glory days of the pre-Y2K era by re-releasing some of its most memorable sneakers of all time. The Nike Air Safari was made popular for its lightweight construction and funky design on the upper, which Tinker Hatfield stated was inspired by a couch he saw at a thrift store. While the Air Safari has re-released on two separate occasions, brace yourself for another Safari redux for 2012, re-done with a light-weight mesh upper and Lunar cushioning. Seven colorways of the Air Safari are to be expected, so take a look at the upcoming re-done classic and let us know what you think of this ‘hybrid’ design.
