The Nike Air Tailwind is one of the oldest retro models that’s currently still floating around on sneaker shelves. The shoes were first introduced to the world back in 1978 when they went on sale at the Honolulu Marathon (A more standard retail release would go down the next year thanks to the sneaker’s success there). After that they were given a proper re-introduction back in 2012 and have popped every once and a while ever since. Which brings us today and this new black/silver/vivid blue pair. Get with us after the break for a more detailed look at these Tailwinds and keep your fingers crossed for a US release soon.

Resurrected after a (too?) long period in the Beaverton vaults, the Nike Air Tailwind is back for the first time in many years with a new crop of releases. Following up on the blue-accented OG Quickstrike comes this similarly simple yet satisfying Medium Grey and Action Red combo whose simple colorblocking is right at home in early 2012, but whose lines and materials let you know this is a classic even without the pre-yellowing from that VNTG QS drop. Click through to get a better look at this new drop of the first shoe ever cushioned by Frank Rudy’s revolutionary Nike Air cushion and grab yours from a Nike Sportswear stockist like Extra Butter.

2012 is certainly the year of the re-issue, with special attention going to the original Air Tailwind – the first ever Nike shoe with ‘Air’ cushioning. This limited release first started to trickle down onto store shelves last month, but it looks like the Tailwind effect is still in play because KITH in New York City will release the Air Tailwind VNTG in the Grey/Blue colorway today. The Air Tailwind release also marks the first Nike release and the new footwear retailer, so what better way to kick off the partnership by releasing one of 2012′s gems? Reintroducing the Nike Air Tailwind

reintroducing the nike tailwind 8 Reintroducing the Nike Air Tailwind

Whenever you lace up in a pair of retro sneaks you are inevitably donning an emblem of history, some relic that broke ground based either on the embedded technology or a bold new aesthetic. The Nike Air Tailwind is certainly a piece of history in its own right, the first sneaker to ever feature the Nike Air cushioning, an idea brought to the House of Swoosh by ex-NASA specialist Frank Rudy. Introduced to the market in a vaguely ‘quickstrike’ fashion before the idea ever existed, a small number of pairs of the Nike Air Tailwind were available at the Honolulu Marathon in 1978, with a wider retail release taking place the following year.

The reintroduction of this first Nike Air shoe has gone down in a similar fashion, with other colorways initially popping up around the world. The OG look shown here, featuring the VNTG treatment to give it a bit of a historical feel, has now begun its slow trickle into premium Nike accounts across the globe. Follow us after the jump for the full shots from the reintroduction of the Nike Air Tailwind and be on the lookout for them at your local sneaker spot.

Nike Air Tailwind Display @ Firmament Berlin

Nike keeps turning the clock back further and further with their retro releases, with 2012 seeming particularly heavy on the vintage looks. The Nike Pre Montreal Racer might be as far back as they go for this year, but the Nike Air Tailwind reaches pretty deep into Swoosh history as well, a sneaker that first hit the market back in ’79. To celebrate the re-release, Berlin’s Firmament put together this snazzy installation, aiming to capture the historical important of the first shoe to feature Nike Air technology. The moon landing comparison is a fitting one, echoing a moment when Nike planted their flag on the sneaker world in what was certainly one giant leap for footwear. Stick with us after the jump for the full photos of this unique in-store display. via HB

Nike Air Tailwind – January 2012

nike air tailwind january 2012 Nike Air Tailwind January 2012
In the world of retro runners, there’s no doubt that Nike’s Air Max line rules the roost. If you are looking to take even further back though, check out this upcoming pack featuring a triple threat of the waffle bottomed classic Nike Air Tailwind. There have been a handful of newer iterations bearing the Tailwind moniker, but this one takes it back to the OG running model that had athletes laced up long before Tinker thought up the air bubble. The material selection doesn’t try to get fancy here, repping the classic trainer look of suede and nylon, with a little leather thrown in on the Swoosh. Get a full look at all three pairs after the jump and grab them from mita ahead of their US release date.
