A notorious scholar and heir to a massive hotel fortune famously claimed that the stuff responsible for plants turning solar radiation into energy for life wasn’t all that interesting. This critical point in Billy Madison’s maturity where the titular protagonist realizes the folly of his scattered focus isn’t all that different from a revolution in athletic training that turned on the lightbulb for millions in the 1980s. The ‘Chlorophyll’ Nike Air Trainer 1 brings us back to the genesis of cross-training, and there’s even a bit of the mouthy everyman we loved in Happy Gilmore with memories of a scrappy John McEnroe tossing his racquet in protest with the ease of Bo Jackson power cleaning multiple plates. So no, definitely not ‘borophyll’ and in fact one of the game-changing releases we’ll always remember as grown-ups, this OG Air Trainer 1 is slated to arrive at Nike Sportswear retailers like Rock City Kicks‘ Fayetteville outpost next Saturday, October 20th.

A recent ‘list’ pointing out the ten ‘rules’ of sneakerheadism suggested we throw out our shoeboxes. This following artwork, put together by Portland-based artist Joel Colley (who also worked on the ParaNormans) for the Nike Graphic Studio Art Show this Saturday, is a collective piece of the Nike shoeboxes in the brand’s history that suggests box-stockpiling isn’t a bad idea. Today, we’re given the option of brown and orange with a few extras bearing the Nike Skateboarding or LeBron/Kobe name, but part of Nike’s amazing history is actually in these sick shoebox designs – most of which we’ve shown you before in our vintage Nike shoebox feature last August. There are certain pieces in here that’ll induce the “oh yeah, I remember that!” and the “what the, when did this happen?” so check out this sick piece by Colley after the jump and let us know which your favorite Nike shoebox is!

Just where does the Air Trainer 1 rank among the greatest Nike innovations of all-time? With it being one of Tinker Hatfield’s first designs for one of the most polarizing professional sports athletes in history, the Air Trainer 1 is certainly more than just a sneaker, but an icon that changed the direction of Nike footwear that has landed it on a plateau unmatched by any other brand. With another release of the OG Chlorophylls on the way, we get to re-live that excitement from a quarter-century ago – the question is, do you already have a pair from the previous Retros? Asian retailers are preparing for a shipment of the Air Trainer 1 ‘Chlorophyll’ later this week, so expect these classics to hit retailers on our side very soon and let us know if you’ll be making room for another pair.

The Air Trainer 1 already received a hefty boost of energy with the ‘Safari’ NRG release of a few weeks back, and tomorrow’s duet of BB51s looks to compound that energy as we near a drop of the original ‘Chlorophyll’. The story of the BB51 goes like this: this set of AT1s is a tribute to Nike founder Bill Bowerman, a former multi-sport athlete who rocked ’51′ on his football jersey while playing for the University of Oregon almost a century ago. The sickest feature is undoubtedly the BB51 call-out on the heel, replacing the Nike logo. Expect these at select Nike Sportswear retailers like Sneaker Bistro tomorrow or cop them right now on eBay.

If it didn’t feel quite right to lump the first Swoosh cross-trainer’s 25th birthday in with the Air Safari’s silver anniversary, Nike Sportswear has more than remedies any issues with a couple of exiting new revelations. Not only will the 1987 original ‘Chlorophyll’ edition return to always-hungry retro trainer fans, but we’ll also get a duo of designs inspired by the man without whom Tinker Hatfield’s genius designs may have never had a platform. The Nike Air Trainer 1 ‘BB51′ shouts out Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman and his University of Oregon football number on black and Vachetta Tan leather builds replete with premium details. Expect these at NSW stores like Social Status this Friday, September 21st and check out new photos of both BB51 Air Trainer 1s after the jump below.

The ’87 catalog continues its rebirth in 2012 with the re-release of the Air Trainer 1 in the OG ‘Chlorophyll’ colorway. Although this return should be met with high praise, the Chlorophylls aren’t new to the re-issue; along with the early-2000s release, the Chlorophylls were available in 2008, as part of a Pack in 2009, and again in 2009 as a singular release. What’s different now? Aside from the timely nature of ‘Silver’ Anniversary, the Trainer 1 is now labeled as a Premium release and will run you $110. That’s the price to pay for the comfort of having a pair of crisp AT1s in your closet, so we’ll keep you in tune with a solid release date because some retailers in Asia are beginning to stock them.

While Bill Bowerman’s name might not ring out as loud as some other Nike big-wigs the co-founder is very much an icon in his own right, responsible for the initial handshake partnership with Phil Knight that got that footwear empire going in the first place. This two pair pack pays homage to the deceased Bowerman, dipping the Tinker Hatfield designed Nike Air Trainer 1 Mid Premium in a premium look that features Bill’s initials across the back along with his football jersey number (coincidentally the ’51′ doubles as a marker for the year in which he won the Bill Hayward Amateur Athlete of the Year award). Both pairs will launch on September 21st, so click through with us to make up your mind on which you’re copping and be advised that you can scoop up the Nike Air Trainer 1 Premium “BB51″ a little early from spots like Crooked Tongues.
