The success of Christopher Nolan’s modern trilogy has taken Batman’s popularity to new heights and we’ve seen a variety of Dark Knight-inspired colorways over the past several years, and as the world prepares for the worldwide premiere of The Dark Night Rises at midnight, it’s worth looking back to how the superhero saga and the history of sneakers intertwine. The connections between the Beaverton and the Caped Crusader stretch all the way back to the Tim Burton era of Batman films, when a partnership between Nike and Warner Bros. made it possible to combine Batman with the Jumpman. Costume director Bob Ringwood noted that “’80s sportswear isn’t going to fit in with [Batman's] 1940s look,” so Tinker Hatfield did what he does best and ‘laced’ up the Dark Knight with some of the brand’s most impressive footwear releases to that point.

The original Batman x Nike Air Trainer III was born for Burton’s 1989 film, and with the reception from Michael Keaton and his stuntmen being so overwhelmingly positive, Tinker took the sneaker-boot concept to new heights for ’92′s Batman Returns. For that sequel, Michael Jordan’s first championship-winning silhouette was made into an even more aggressive Batman x Air Jordan VI boot, with a shroud-like addition on the forefoot and an attached boot collar that actually played a role in the entire Batman ensemble. It’s particularly interesting to note Nike/Jordan’s immense influence over pop culture (even the early ’90s Batman figures wore AT3s and AJ6s!), and with last year’s release of the Mag 2011, could Jordan Brand take it a step further and release an Air Jordan VI ‘Dark Knight’?. Click through to see both styles, let us know which you’d pick in a fantasy scenario and stick with Sneaker News for more rare Air Jordans.  Photos: NT/DeFY

Complex’s Complete Sneaker Guide To Spike Lee’s ‘Do The Right Thing’

Spike Lee seems to leave a profound mark in whatever realm he steps foot on. Already considered to be one of the iconic film directors of our generation and noted sneakerheads of the sub-culture, Spike Lee’s interests have crossed over from time to time – most notably in the 1989 film ‘Do The Right Thing’. Nikes and Air Jordans are easily spotted throughout the entire movie, which is a rather accurate depiction of the popularity of sneakers in the inner city; kicks like the Air Jordan IV, Nike Air Trainer III, and Nike Air Force II are just some of what can be seen during many of the memorable scenes. Even more recently, Jordan Brand has released a few select Air Jordan Retros in inspired colorways, like the Air Jordan 1 and Air Jordan III. We’ve got a quick sampling of Complex’s latest list below, so take a look and head to Complex for the full feature.

Nike Air Trainer III – White – Cool Grey – Deep Royal – Black

The Nike Air Trainer III was one of the many inclusions in 2010′s Nike Air Attack Pack, which featured Air-cushioned Nike classics redone in five unique tonal-themed colorways. The color-blocking may have been a bit unfitting for the Air Trainer III because it didn’t take advantage of the tech-y multi-layered look, so we’re glad this new release of the Air Trainer III goes back to the way things once were. Check out this White, Cool Grey, Deep Royal, and Black rendition of the Nike Air Trainer III; it features a basic white and cool grey upper with a black forefoot strap and outrigger with a deep royal heel. An interesting note about this release is the tongue tag, which is actually from the Air Attack Pack, so these images are either of a preliminary sample of even a sign of things to come for 2011 (another Air Attack?). More detailed shots are below, so take a look, and hit up TGWO for yours.
