Welcome back, Nike Air Waffle Trainer. We’ve missed you. Last seen on Sneaker News some nine months ago, this enduring member of Nike Sportswear’s faux-retro running lineup returns with its most expressive colorway to date. Ironically, this increase in attention comes from a traditional concealment pattern, as we get an earthy camo print on the midsole of a brown/black design featuring yellow and red accents. The finished look is aggressive as it sounds on paper, and you can see them in more photos below before grabbing at your local NSW retailer.

Before you youngin’s had all your fancy Air Max bubbles and your LunarLon soles there was simply the waffle. Pressed up on a griddle by Bill Bowerman himself, the nubbed out configuration remains a relevant part of Swoosh history. Why not bring it back then? Any self respecting sneakerhead knows by now the story of Bill Bowerman and his waffle iron. The classic tale of American ingenuity and innovation was latched onto early by the storytellers at Nike, and re-imagined as soon as the late 1980′s during Nike’s trainer obsession, where the waffle technology came back in the form of the Nike Air Waffle Trainer. While sneaker technology has obviously progressed leaps and bound since then, the waffled outsole remains a sentimental piece of Swoosh history-and one that still manages to look good in this 2012 retro. Caliroots has two new colorways on deck, a clean white pair with midnight navy on the swoosh, and a darker pair that extends the midnight navy choice to wrap all around the upper. There’s so much ‘waffle’ in the name of this newest release from Nike Sportswear you might as well call them the Air Eggos. The Nike Air Waffle Trainer reads ‘Waffle Trainer’ on its tongue and has been referred to as such and also alternately called just ‘Air Waffle’. It’s a modern design that evokes classic styling with a callout to the original Nike runners built atop a griddle iron, this latest orange-accented tonal grey edition not offering any obvious food analogies but looking fairly appetizing all the same.
