Nike co-found Bill Bowerman said it’s all about the feet – not the shoes, and that ethos still guides a certain sector of Nike’s runners. That would be the Nike Free category, which is celebrating its ten-year anniversary in 2014 with the return of the original Nike Free silhouette. Of course the Swoosh has a long history of creating these sort of stripped down sneakers that begins way back with the Cortez in 1972 and stops along the way at Beaverton-design hallmarks like the Nike Huarache and the Presto. Nike WMNS Cortez Classic “Year of the Horse”

Before Chinese New Year evolved from inspiration for a select few sneakers once a year into a calendar-wide call to arms, it was the Nike Cortez that was selected as the Year of the Tiger representative. That pair’s ‘five finger death grip’ special packaging remains one of the more innovative sneaker boxes on record (the Flightposite Exposed looks to have assumed that role this year), so this ‘Year of the Horse‘ Cortez has quite the legacy to live up to. There doesn’t appear to be a premium box with these WMNS joints, and it feels appropriate that the original Nike running shoe could go back to basics while still utilizing significant detail on the golden uppers. Click in to see these from more angles, then buy yours from ID4shoes on eBay.

Here’s the shoe in its most basic form, a black leather Cortez Basic with white accents the likes of which George Costanza was spotted wearing on Seinfeld more than once. It’s a timeless look with universal appeal and is available now at NSW retailers like Oneness.

It looks like the Nike Cortez is joining in on the “Disco” retros from Nike. In case you missed it-we’ve already seen a “Disco Ball” set including the Air Max 1 and Nike Dunk Sky Hi and a “Night Track” duo of Nike Air Max 1s. The Cortez among them is a little bit more abstract in its referencing of the theme, but we’d say there’s still a bit of a 70s vibe in there. See more after the click and stay tuned to Sneaker News for more updates on Nike Retro release like the Cortez right here.
